Overview

Con Edison, a multibillion-dollar energy utility, is leading the clean energy transition in New York City and Westchester County. We are investing hundreds of millions of dollars annually to integrate distributed resources into our electric and gas systems, support electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and scale adoption of energy efficiency and clean heating technologies across our customers. The Area Station Planning team is at the core of the Con Edison strategic vision to help the New York State achieve its Climate Leadership & Community Protection Act (CLCPA) goals. Reporting to the Section Manager, the Sr. Engineer is pivotal to planning the electric facilities infrastructure, specifically at the Sub-transmission feeder, Area Substation and 4 kV Unit Substation level. The selected candidate will identify solutions for clean energy projects by collaborating with customers, internal stakeholder organizations, renewable energy developers, utilities, and government funding agencies. Selected candidate will develop subject matter expertise in Area Substation planning from start to finish, identifying load relief recommendations for supply feeders and substations, facilitate project feasibility and coordination with different planning, engineering and operations groups to funding and implementation.The Sr. Engineer will provide both engineering and business support associated with implementation of existing and new planning processes to prepare the grid for the clean energy future. Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Assume primary responsibility in preparation of Ten-Year and Twenty-Year (Long-Term) Area Substation Load Relief Programs for designated operational regions
  • Assist in preparation of Ten-Year 4 kV Substation Load Relief Program
  • Perform load flow studies to support the sub-transmission feeder and area substation supply to the distribution system
  • Review and develop load flow model base cases
  • Calculate and maintain sub-transmission feeder and substation capability database utilizing latest equipment ratings, system configurations and future state considerations
  • Work with internal stake holders to evaluate solutions that are cost effective, non-traditional alternatives with the objective to provide load relief to meet forecasted demand & consideration of future needs
  • Utilize PI tags to pull historical data to support system studies, analyze trends, patterns, and system events
  • Read, interpret and develop electrical one-line diagrams
  • Facilitate and participate in recurring project meetings to monitor and provide input throughout the project lifecyclefrom initial concept through planning, design, operational review, and final implementation
  • Oversee, guide and train Engineers, Associate Engineers, LDPs, when so directed
  • Provide guidance and technical assistance to Electric Operations Regions, System Operation, Substation Operations, Customer Energy Solutions, Transmission Planning, Central Engineering groups such as Asset Management, Transmission Line Engineering as required
  • Perform special tasks (technical and non-technical) and assignments as required

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and Minimum 8 years of related work experience or
  • Master's Degree in Engineering and Minimum 6 years of related work experience
Relevant Work Experience
  • Requires work experience in engineering and/or operations of an electrical utility including technical knowledge of utility electrical system. Required
  • Experience with planning, engineering and/or operation of the electric system -Transmission system, Area Substation and/or 4 kV Unit Substation, distribution system Required
  • Knowledge of power systems, transmission and distribution Required
  • A working understanding of Power System analysis tools, database applications, and handling & management of large volume of data Required
  • The ability to understand and prepare one-line diagrams Required
  • Good communication, negotiation, and organizational skills and accountability, required. Required
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, demonstrate excellent problem-solving abilities. Providing exemplary customer service to supporting teams and organizations Required
  • Ability to conduct presentations to audiences of all sizes and types. Required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Project, Teams, OneDrive, etc.), as well as other company software systems. Required

Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to work from the Company's corporate headquarters in New York City
  • Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed.
  • May be required to carry handouts, laptop computer, etc. to meetings.
