Overview
The Department of Communication and Media at Utah State University (Logan campus) seeks applications for a Utah Public Radio (UPR) Station Manager and Assistant Professor of Professional Practice. This faculty member will oversee the administrative and business functions of UPR and regularly teach courses related to their expertise. As the station manager, this faculty member will maximize revenue, increase market share, enhance ratings, control expenses, and provide essential financial analysis and forecasts at UPR. The manager will also support and coach the UPR team to ensure professionalism and competence.

Utah Public Radio broadcasts news, information, public affairs, and cultural programming 24 hours a day across Utah and in Southern Idaho. UPR is situated within the Department of Communication & Media at Utah State University, which offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Journalism, Communication Studies, and Technical Communication and Rhetoric. Utah State University is home to award winning researchers and instructors. As a land-grant institution, USU provides readily available, research-based programs and educational resources in efforts to improve the lives of residents across the state. Situated in a mountain valley 80 miles north of Salt Lake City, USU is surrounded by numerous trail systems, the Logan River, Beaver Mountain Ski Resort, Bear Lake, and a growing restaurant and music scene downtown.

Responsibilities
The responsibilities for this role include 70% Station Manager administrative duties (area of excellence), 20% teaching (area of effectiveness), and 10% service. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Direct all aspects of public radio operations: programming, production, development, promotion, and engineering across broadcast and digital platforms.
  • Develop marketing strategies that achieve audience targets for broadcast and digital properties (web, mobile, digital-only streams, podcasts, etc.).
  • Coordinate with USU administration and relevant departments on financial reviews, performance metrics, fundraising, membership engagement, campaign planning, and grant applications.
  • Lead partnerships and donor engagement efforts that maximize station revenue while ensuring high-quality content and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with FCC and other regulatory and branding standards.
  • Oversee UPR staff operations, including hiring, scheduling, and delegating responsibilities.
  • Lead the UPR team in the development of web and mobile content strategies, and promotional and fundraising efforts to grow audience engagement and expand digital presence.
  • Teach three courses annually (one course each in fall, spring, summer) across the department's curriculum, and mentor students in reporting and digital content creation, and develop new courses in line with the candidate's expertise.
  • Stay informed on industry trends and best practices.
  • Provide service to the department, university, and profession.
  • Represent UPR at local and national events and conferences and act as primary contact for national networks (NPR, APM, PRX).


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • 3+ years of successful radio experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with hosting radio programs, emerging technologies, production equipment and processes, editing software, and multi-platform content strategies (broadcast and digital).

Preferred Qualifications
  • A Master's degree in Journalism, Communication, or a related field.
  • Leadership experience.
  • Experience supervising teams and collaborating with senior management, colleagues across departments, partnership organizations, donors, and the broader public.
  • Interest in mentoring students and teaching news writing and production, media writing, public relations, feature writing classes, or similar courses for radio and digital content.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with teaching experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong financial management skills and business acumen.
  • Proven track record of generating revenue growth and engagement with diverse donors.
  • Ability to stay current with industry trends and implement innovative, strategic solutions to local and system-wide challenges.
  • Ability to design and implement multi-platform programming strategies across broadcast and digital channels.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to fulfill teaching, programming, fundraising, community outreach, and other role responsibilities.
