Mission

The Vice President of Construction is a senior executive responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational oversight for all construction activities across the company's portfolio-including asphalt paving, road and bridge projects, utility work, and concrete construction. This role ensures that business objectives are aligned with project execution, driving safety, quality, and profitability throughout the organization. The VP reports directly to the President/CEO and serves as a key member of the executive leadership team.

Main Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Drive the Company's safety culture and all safety initiatives, including those defined and implemented by the Safety Steering and Continuous Improvement teams
  • Promote organizational core values, vision, mission, code of ethics, and safety, workplace conduct, and other policies and best practices
  • Develop and execute operational strategies that align with overall company goals and objectives for medium and long-term development
  • Mentor project management and operations leaders, supporting professional growth and succession planning
  • Respond to employee feedback and drive initiatives to attract, develop, and retain top talent
  • Drive change initiatives to maintain a dynamic and flexible business model responsive to market conditions
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders

Operational Oversight

  • Provide general oversight and direction to project management and construction operations teams
  • Oversee and direct construction planning processes, including budgeting, bidding, and scheduling
  • Ensure efficient utilization of materials, equipment, and personnel while promoting safety, quality, and profitability
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of the market area, products/services, sales approach, regulations, and business climate
  • Ensure operational practices comply with safety, environmental, and other regulatory requirements

Financial Management

  • Oversee budget, forecasting, and bid processes for construction operations
  • Analyze market data to develop market strategies, bid targets, and performance goals
  • Set and monitor financial goals, targets, and KPIs for construction operations
  • Approve budgets and capital planning; routinely review expenses, budgets, and cost reports
  • Present financial and operational results to executive leadership
  • Ensure business practices align with ethics policies, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements

$250,000-300,000 plus bonus

Requirements and Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, construction management or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience); advanced degree preferred
  • Valid drivers' license and ability to maintain a clean driving record

Skills:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in heavy civil construction and/or related field
  • 5+ years in a mid to senior level leadership role, with demonstrated ability to mentor and develop teams
  • Strong financial acumen: budgeting, forecasting, and data analysis
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Advanced proficiency in construction software, project management tools, ERP systems, and Microsoft Office Suite

Physical Requirements:

  • Wear and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by company safety guidelines
  • Occasionally required to lift and /or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
  • Frequently required to sit for long periods at a desk using a computer
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Regularly required to use hands to feel, handle and manipulate objects, write, use a keyboard and/or mobile device
  • Regularly required to communicate (talk and hear), and perform tasks requiring visual acuity
  • Exposure to typical construction/industrial site conditions, including dust/chemicals and loud noise, heavy equipment and machinery, all weather conditions, and walking across uneven terrain
  • Travel with overnight stays away from home, including some international travel
