This role is part of the Emerging Systems Business Unit, which will shape the future of our in-space infrastructure capabilities.

The Emerging Systems business unit at Blue Origin is pioneering the future of space-based communications with TeraWave, a revolutionary satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This multi-orbit constellation will consist of 5,408 optically interconnected satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO), providing enterprise-grade connectivity for critical operations worldwide.

As senior terrestrial network engineer you will play a vital leadership role within a team of specialists, technicians, and engineers, significantly contributing to the operation of the constellation and the network operations center.

Your role will involve utilizing your expertise with networking to help prototype and implement the ground network architecture, participate in creation and implementation of simulators which can be used to evaluate implementations of the architecture, and working with the team to realize the architecture.

  • Location: Preferred San Francisco Bay-area, CA or Kent, WA (with potential for other Blue Origin locations)

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Test, prototype and implement network orchestration solutions to create a routing/switching framework for ground gateways.
  • Create and maintain network models to predict performance and identify optimization opportunities
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate network capabilities into broader systems and applications
  • Analyze network performance and troubleshoot complex issues across distributed systems
  • Implement security best practices and protocols to protect network infrastructure
  • Evaluate and recommend new networking technologies and solutions to enhance network capabilities and performance
  • Understand the implications of network planning on spacecraft operations and design accordingly
  • Key contributor to technical discussions on networking solutions

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Network Engineering, or related technical field
  • 5+ years of experience in ground network design, implementation, test or engineering
  • Experience with datacenter network connectivity implementation, telco/cellular backhaul and Points of Presence (PoPs)
  • Experience with networking and network protocols
  • Experience with testing and implementing software-defined networking solutions
  • Experience with network modeling and simulation tools
  • Proficiency in developing and maintaining network diagrams and technical documentation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • 10+ years of experience in network architecture with focus on routing
  • Experience with networking and network protocols including MEF, SD-WAN, BGP, MPLS, SRv6, L2 VPNs, L3 VPNs
  • Experience with networking for constrained links such as 3GPP and satellite networks
  • Knowledge of network operations and constraints as they relate to satellite communications systems
  • Familiarity with network function virtualization and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Background in aerospace or defense industries
  • Certifications such as CCIE, JNCIE, or equivalent advanced networking certifications
  • Knowledge of emerging multi-domain networking standards and technologies

Compensation Range for:

CA applicants is $145,188.00 - $203,263.20 WA applicants is $145,188.00 - $203,263.20

  • Required for certain Job Profiles: Ability to obtain and maintain Merchant Mariner Credential, which includes pre-employment and random drug testing as well as DOT physical
