POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Senior Director of External Communications, the Manager of External Communications leads the day-to-day implementation of BMC Health System's external communications strategy and serves as the central connector between high-level planning and operational execution.

The Manager executes the monthly proactive media engagement plan, actively securing placement of news stories across local and national outlets, triages incoming media requests, and prepares briefing materials and talking points for administrators, clinicians, and executives.

The Manager maintains strong relationships with key reporters and producers, oversees internal media reporting to ensure alignment with organizational priorities, and uses data and trends to inform ongoing media strategy. This role also supports the creation of external communications content and provides counsel to internal leaders as they seek to elevate their work externally.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:


  • Stays abreast of national, health, and local news and communications trends to proactively develop monthly media engagement strategy plans and execute in collaboration with administrators and clinicians critical to the execution of the monthly plan.
  • Organizes and prioritizes incoming media requests and develops the recommended response approach.
  • Leads the preparation of media and external organization briefing documents and external talking points that will guide BMC Health System spokespeople on how to best and consistently represent the health system.
  • Develop and manage an internal spokesperson council to ensure we have informed clinicians ready to engage in incoming media requests.
  • Supports the development of compelling and values-consistent news content, including new releases, op-eds, podcasts, blog and social posts.
  • Optimizes and manages reporting tools to strategically drive our internal narrative through the sharing of critical news of note.
  • Leverages reporting data to inform our month-over-month proactive media engagement strategies and to increase Communications metrics acumen across the BMC Health System organization
  • Reviews and supports patient-facing content.
  • Provide external engagement counsel to administrators and clinicians as they seek to elevate their work externally.
  • Serves as key member of team responding to emergency and other crisis media situations, including providing on-call after-hours communications support.
  • Maintains excellent relationships with key healthcare and other reporters, editors, columnists, and producers.
  • Serves as in-house media relations advisor and liaison to key faculty and executives.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree required, preferably in a related field

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

None

EXPERIENCE:

5-8 years progressive experience in communications, including public relations, media relations, journalism, or a directly related field, is required.

Experience in healthcare is required, and hospital media relations experience (particularly academic medical center experience) is desirable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSA):


  • Proven track record developing effective media relations strategies and managing high profile proactive and reactive media interactions.
  • Excellent working relationships with members of the media.
  • Knowledge of local and national healthcare and medical issues and environment.
  • Must possess ability to work collaboratively across teams in large, fast-paced and complex organizational environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and analyze complex issues.
  • Excellent writer and editor with keen attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal communicator.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS (responsible for on-call, 24 hr. coverage, etc.):

Rotates on-call responsibility with other staff members

Compensation Range:

$90,500.00- $131,500.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness. In addition, BMCHS offers generous total compensation that includes, but is not limited to, benefits (medical, dental, vision, pharmacy), discretionary annual bonuses and merit increases, Flexible Spending Accounts, 403(b) savings matches, paid time off, career advancement opportunities, and resources to support employee and family well-being.
