Chassis Steering Systems Engineer
Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is looking for an engineer to join the Chassis Engineering Design Team/Department
The Team: Chassis Engineering Design is a collaborative and innovation-driven team at a leading automotive company. The Chassis Engineering Design Team values open communication, continuous learning, and a hands-on approach. Additionally, the Chassis Engineering Design Team fosters a culture where senior engineers guide less experienced colleagues, share knowledge freely, and work together to solve complex engineering challenges. The team is committed to delivering high-quality, safe, and reliable Chassis systems, encouraging creative problem-solving and ownership at all levels. As part of the Chassis Engineering Design Team, one would work closely with a diverse group of designers, testers, and manufacturing engineers in an environment that rewards initiative, technical excellence, and professional growth.
The Position: The Chassis Steering Systems Engineer would support design, development, and validation-related efforts concerning steering systems for U.S. SUV, pickup truck, and off-road vehicles to create a robust, high-performance steering architecture. Additionally, one would work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration, meet customer requirements, and achieve durability and reliability goals.
What You Will Do:
- Steering System Development: Engage in the end-to-end concept, architecture, and detail design of hydraulic and electric power steering systems (including pumps, valves, racks, columns, motors, and actuators) for pickup trucks and off-road vehicles
- 3D CAD Modeling: Support, create, and refine complex 3D models and assemblies in CATIA V5. Develop comprehensive steering system package layouts, mounting brackets, and interfaces with chassis and suspension components.
- System Requirements and Analysis: Support with the definition of steering system requirements (e.g., steering effort, feedback, kinematics, durability, NVH, etc.) and help perform engineering analysis. Support analysis of CAE/FEA tools as needed to validate structural stiffness, fatigue life, and thermal performance of steering components.
- Prototyping and Testing:Support test plans for component and system validation (e.g., bench tests, road tests, durability rigs, etc.). Help analyze test data to verify performance, calibrate variable-assist features, and identify any steering-related issues.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all steering designs comply with relevant FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) and SAE regulations, including considerations such as steering-column collapse, steering wheel lash, electronic stability control inputs, and integration with braking and safety systems
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with electrical engineers, vehicle dynamics experts, suspension and brake teams, manufacturing teams, and quality assurance teams to integrate the steering system into the overall vehicle. Participate in design reviews, tolerance stack-ups, and system integration meetings to ensure compatibility and performance.
- Supplier Coordination: Collaborate with Tier-1 suppliers of steering components. Support technical packages, review supplier designs, and drive supplier testing and validation to meet team specifications.
- Documentation: Prepare and maintain engineering documentation, including system design specifications, component drawings, bills of materials (BOM), DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)/FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), DFSS (Design for Six Sigma) documentation, and validation test reports
- Leadership and Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and support to other engineers and team members
- Problem Solving and Continuous Improvement:Investigate and resolve engineering issues during development and support after-production launch issues (if requested). Support the implementation of corrective actions and collaborate with other team members on continuous improvement efforts of steering system designs and development processes. Review IQS, VDS, JD Power, and Consumer Reports to support warranty and quality issues.
- Travel:Travel up to 20% of the time, both domestically and internationally
What You Will Bring to the Role:
- Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, or a related field
- 0-7 years of professional experience in chassis and suspension design, with a focus on steering systems
- Experience specifically with pickup trucks, SUVs, or off-road vehicles is highly preferred
- Experience working on electric or hybrid vehicle steering systems
- Prior experience with pickup trucks, SUVs, or off-road vehicles and knowledge of their specific steering systems, durability, set-up, articulation, etc., is advantageous
- In-depth understanding of vehicle ride and handling, off-road performance, and NVH considerations specific to heavy-duty trucks and SUVs
- Good working knowledge of vehicle body and NVH performance
- Knowledge of solid axle and independent suspension systems in off-road conditions
- Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., CATIA V6, NX, Solidworks, etc.)
- CATIA V5 experience highly preferred, but not required
- Experience using engineering tools to create and modify 2D and 3D drawings
- Familiarity with PDM (e.g., ENOVIA V6) or Windchill PLM systems
- Knowledge of mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering design and processes
- Knowledge of tooling design variables and processes, along with related materials
- Innovative thinking and proactive approaches to the technical direction of chassis components
- Ability to explain technical topics to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Adept in Microsoft programs, such as Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word
- An ability to prepare reports/spreadsheets (when needed) to support project-related work
- Excellenttime management, self-management, and organization skills
- Strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills
- Valid Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, or a related field
- Familiarity with variable-assist steering mechanisms (i.e., hydraulic flow controls or adaptive electronic steering algorithms), plus experience tuning them
- Hands-on knowledge of steering dampers and their role in ride/handling
- Proficiency in utilizing CAE tools (e.g., ANSYS, Nastran, and MATLAB/Simulink) for advanced suspension modeling, dynamic simulations, and/or product optimization
