Description

The Exploration and Environmental Division at Leidos currently has an opening for a split shift Laboratory Manager to work in our onsite USACE FUSRAP laboratory in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. This position will be required to work a shifted schedule when required by the project schedule (e.g., 0930 - 2000). All other shifts will align with the normal project schedule (e.g., 0600 - 1430). Support of other Leidos onsite laboratories may be required.

The Laboratory Manager will focus on the procurement, setup, development, and management of radiochemistry laboratories including the development of a full range of radiochemistry procedures for our portfolio of work and projects in cleanup of contamination at the project site. As part of our project team, you will be responsible for supporting the development and oversight of the site radiochemistry and inorganicchemistry analytical programs and capabilities. In this role you will work closely with the project team to identify the number of analyses required per unit time for each analyst, determine the types and number of equipment to be procured and installed, and the staffing requirements that will be needed to meet project goals. The management of the lab will include oversight of the operations of the laboratory and the supervising of staff to ensure project sample throughput requirements are met. The position will employ multiple radiochemical and non-radiochemical techniques on environmental samples related to site characterization, site remediation, environmental permits, effluent waters, waste disposal, and general project support. You will also utilize data management system(s) to manage samples/data from beginning of sampling to the end of analysis and will work closely with the Project Chemist to conduct data validation and quality assurance/quality and produce control reports in support of an environmental remediation program for a group of clients.

The position will require obtaining training and passing BeLPT blood test and medical exam for working in a Beryllium environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of laboratory instrumentation and maintaining instrument charts.
  • Supervision of staff to meet throughput and turnaround times; assist with hiring and training staff.
  • Revision and development of radioanalytical and inorganic analysis methods and enhancement of instrumentation performance.
  • Successful reporting of required Performance Evaluation Sample Analysis Programs.
  • Maintain effective communications concerning characterization efforts internal to the laboratory and with the project team.
  • Review and evaluate data obtained by in house methods to ensure that they meet the quality requirements associated with regulatory programs and project measurement quality objectives.
  • Routine communication and coordination with Data Management Group (DMG) management and staff to ensure overall project data objective(s) are satisfied.
  • Collaborate with other scientists and technical personnel in a fast-paced, flexible work environment.
  • Utilize Windows based personal computers, instrumentation operation, data reporting, analytical calculations, and sample management.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or closely related field with 5+ years' experience in set up and operational management of a Radiochemistry laboratory, or closely related lab experience.
  • Familiarity with industry environmental data validation practices/policies/procedures.
  • Familiar with radiological, inorganic and organic laboratory methods, QA/QC elements and record keeping.
  • Proficient with computer software programs including spreadsheets, database, and other Microsoft Office products.
  • Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation including radiological counting systems and ICP/MS.
  • Further education beyond initial scientific degree, viz. data validation practices, quality assurance/control courses, statistics.
  • Due to contract requirements, U.S. citizenship or U.S. Permanent Resident status is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance.
  • Ability to obtain training and passing BeLPT blood test and medical exam for working in a Beryllium environment.
  • Ability and willingness to work various shifts.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters in Chemistry, Radiochemistry, Nuclear Chemistry, or a related discipline
  • Prior experience with Beryllium sample analysis using ICP-MS and Optical Fluorescence.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with modern sample preparation and separation methods used in the isotopic and elemental characterization with emphases on nuclear and inorganic materials
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
  • Maintain training requirements and qualification for Radiation Worker II, HAZWOPER, and Beryllium worker training including the BeLPT.
  • Working knowledge of DoD DOE Quality Systems Manual Requirements and experience with performing/undergoing ELAP, AIHA, and/or DOECAP audits.

Salary Range for this position is: $105K to $115K
