Blood Bank Senior Lead Medical Technologist

Department:
Laboratory Medicine - Transfusion Services (Blood Bank)

Position Summary:
The Senior Lead Medical Technologist serves as a subject matter expert and operational team leader within the Blood Bank under the guidance of the Blood Bank Supervisor. This role is responsible for performing and overseeing complex blood bank testing, providing technical and regulatory guidance for other Blood Bank staff, coordinating staff training and competency, and supporting daily operations to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient Transfusion Services. The Senior Lead Tech performs all duties and responsibilities of the Blood Bank Supervisor, when the Supervisor is on vacation or unavailable. This position plays a critical role in quality management, blood inventory oversight, validation testing, and inspection readiness in accordance with AABB, CAP, CLIA, FDA, and NJSDOH.

Responsibilities:

Technical & Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Perform and interpret routine and complex blood bank testing, including ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening, antibody identification, compatibility testing, and special studies testing (Elutions and cold adsorptions).
  • Independently review, interpret, and complete complex antibody identification work ups and provide consultative guidance to staff as needed.
  • Resolve serologic discrepancies and trouble shoot complex testing issues.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and result reporting within the laboratory information system, SoftBank SCC.
  • Collaborating with other medical staff to support patient transfusions.
  • Support downtime and emergency release workflows as required.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership, communication, and mentoring skills. High level of attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.

Quality, Equipment, and Validation Responsibilities:

  • Oversees daily, weekly, monthly, and periodic quality control activities.
  • Coordinates and/or performs equipment maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and validation testing for new testing/ equipment/ LIS updates.
  • Participates in method validation, instrument validation, and process change assessments.
  • Manages blood inventory to ensure adequate supply, minimize wastage, and support patient transfusion needs.
  • Supports blood utilization initiatives and patient blood management efforts.
  • Participates in regulatory inspections, transfusion audits, and assessments including: inspection preparation, corrective actions, and follow-up activities.
  • Support continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field.
  • ASCP certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)
  • Minimum of five (5) years' of Blood Bank/ Transfusion Services experience that includes complex serologic testing.
  • Strong knowledge of Blood Bank regulations and standards (AABB, CAP, CLIA).
