THE POSITION

Golden West College is seeking a full-time, equity-minded, tenure-track faculty member in Ethnic Studies with an emphasis in Chicano Studies, commencing with the Fall 2026 semester. The primary teaching assignment involves all areas of Chicano Studies. This assignment also includes curriculum and program development; participation in department, division, and college committees; participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines; the leveraging of student support resources; participation in ongoing professional development; and maintaining and performing required accreditation for the program.

The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, or off-campus and is subject to change as needed. The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of Golden West College and the Coast Community College District with a clear, focused commitment to offer inspiration, innovation and meaningful learning experiences to its diverse and changing community and prepares students to achieve success in post-secondary, career and technical, and life-long educational opportunities.

Located in the coastal community of Huntington Beach, Golden West College is regarded as one of the most beautiful campuses in Southern California. The college is highly regarded for academic quality and innovation. In its earliest years, the college was recognized for its pioneering leadership in designing learning-centered programs and services for its student body and continues that tradition to this day.

THE DEPARTMENT

We are a department comprising Ethnic Studies, Sociology, Economics, and Political Science, with five full-time faculty who are deeply equity-driven and actively engaged across campus and in the broader community. Within the department, faculty hold key leadership roles-including serving as the Umoja Coordinator, chairing the Council on Curriculum and Instruction, and partnering with the Center for Innovation and Learning to facilitate data-informed professional development cohorts. Faculty are also deeply embedded in community-based work connected to their fields, strengthening partnerships that enhance student learning and support GWC's mission.

The Social Sciences Department values thoughtful collaboration, reflective practice, and culturally responsive pedagogy that centers student success and honors the lived experiences of our diverse campus community. Our work is grounded in a commitment to fostering a learning environment that is critical, inclusive, community-rooted, and aligned with the transformative goals of Ethnic Studies.

Faculty have the opportunity to enhance their classroom methods during two professional development days during the academic year, which include learning sessions that support student success.

  • Provide instruction in Chicano Studies in accordance with established course outlines
  • Provide leadership in the development and revision of Chicano Studies curriculum responsive to the students served
  • Participate in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation; participate in and develop programs to measure student performance
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics
  • Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to: teach all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; follow the department course outlines; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; submit student grades according to established deadlines; post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college and/or district-wide activities and committees as assigned
  • Engage with students across campus through culturally responsive programming, mentoring, and participation in student-centered initiatives aligned with Chicano Studies and Ethnic Studies
  • Write, refine, and expand Chicano Studies program curriculum and contribute to building a coherent, transfer-aligned Chicano Studies program
  • Establish and maintain professional networks with faculty at transfer institutions-including CSU, UC, and private universities-to support articulation, transfer pathways, and disciplinary alignment
  • Participate in regional and national conferences and professional organizations to remain current in the field of Chicano Studies and to sustain active engagement in scholarly or community-based work
  • Contribute to strengthening community partnerships relevant to Chicano Studies and Ethnic Studies, supporting experiential learning, outreach, and community-engaged pedagogy

Qualifications and Physical Demands

Minimum Qualifications

Must meet one of the following qualifications under Ethnic Studies and must meet one of the following qualifications under Chicano Studies.

Ethnic Studies
Master's in African-American/Black/Africana Studies or Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Chicana/o Studies, or Asian American Studies, or Native American/ American Indian Studies
OR
Master's in Ethnic Studies OR the equivalent.

Master's degree in Chicano Studies

Ethnic Studies OR the equivalent

Additional Required Qualifications

  • One year of experience teaching online and a demonstrated understanding of Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) requirements in the online learning environment.
  • Experience building curriculum or an understanding of the curriculum development process within the California Community College system.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least two years of college-level teaching experience as the instructor of record, which may include part-time or single-course assignments, and may be a combination of community college and/or four-year institution experience
  • Experience building course-level curriculum in Chicano Studies or Ethnic Studies
  • Experience developing program-level curriculum in Chicano Studies or Ethnic Studies
  • Experience supporting and mentoring students through activities such as academic guidance, culturally responsive advising, research or project supervision, or facilitating student engagement in campus or community initiatives
  • Evidence of the ability to self-reflect, respond to evidence-based assessments of student learning, and revise one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students
  • Experience and skill in addressing issues of equity in the classroom
  • Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in Chicano Studies (Ethnic Studies), particularly as it relates to the relevance of the discipline to students' lives, interests, and communities
  • Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within Chicano Studies (Ethnic Studies) courses and classrooms
  • Demonstrated desire and ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of the Coast Community College District
  • Demonstrated desire and ability to take on leadership roles within the department and the institution
  • Proficiency in using a Learning Management System (LMS) such as Canvas to manage course materials and communication, complete logistical tasks (e.g., posting syllabi, submitting grades), deliver course content (e.g., uploading lecture videos, setting up discussion boards and quizzes), and ensure accessibility and usability
  • Experience teaching in multiple modalities-including in-person, online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced formats-as well as across different course lengths (e.g., full-semester, accelerated, and short-term courses)
  • Evidence of the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing

SELECTION PROCEDURE

During the campus visit, each candidate will be interviewed and may be asked to conduct a short teaching demonstration/presentation on a previously announced topic as well as participate in a writing exercise and/or hands-on practical. The search committee will rate the candidate's responses to the interview questions, the demonstration/presentation, and the applicable writing exercises and/or hands-on practical. Based on this rating, a number of candidates will be recommended to move forward and will be invited to the campus for a second level interview.

The campus President will make the final recommendation for employment to the Board of Trustees. The successful candidate will be offered the position and placed on the current salary schedule based on their education and experience.

The start date will be determined by the hiring manager depending on the needs of the campus and the conditions of employment as posted in the job announcement/recruitment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

For a full-time, two-semester position a maximum starting range of $67,053 - $114,317 is offered, based on the salary schedule of AA. In addition, an annual stipend of $3,911 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.

Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.
