This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

Applies advanced welding engineering principles to develop, implement, and optimize welding processes for aerospace components, structures, and systems. Responsible for ensuring welding quality, reliability, and compliance with aerospace standards while supporting the manufacturing of launch vehicles, spacecraft, and ground support equipment.

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and qualify welding procedures for aerospace applications including aluminum, stainless steel, nickel alloys, and other advanced materials
  • Implement and maintain welding quality standards in compliance with AWS, ASME, and aerospace-specific requirements
  • Provide technical support for production welding operations and resolve manufacturing issues
  • Lead weld failure investigations and root cause analysis
  • Design and implement weld fixture requirements and tooling solutions
  • Support NDE/NDT activities related to weld quality verification
  • Create detailed welding documentation including work instructions, process specifications, and quality inspection criteria
  • Analyze weld metallurgy and mechanical properties to optimize process parameters
  • Evaluate and implement new welding technologies including automation opportunities
  • Train and mentor welders on proper techniques and procedures
  • Participate in design reviews to assess weldability and manufacturability
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams for Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis (DFMEA)
  • Support supplier management for outsourced weld operations

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in welding engineering for precision applications
  • Knowledge of various welding processes including GTAW, GMAW, EB, Laser, and Resistance welding
  • Experience with weld quality standards and inspection methods (radiography, ultrasonic testing, penetrant testing)
  • Proficiency with weld procedure qualification and documentation
  • Understanding of metallurgy and material properties related to welding
  • Experience with weld fixture design and tooling requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (Master's or Ph.D.) in Welding Engineering or Materials Science
  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or Certified Welding Engineer (CWE) credentials
  • Experience in aerospace or defense industry welding applications
  • Knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, AWS D17.1, or similar aerospace welding standards
  • Experience with welding automation, robotics, or digital manufacturing technologies
  • Background in pressure vessel or cryogenic system manufacturing
  • Experience with additive manufacturing or advanced joining technologies
  • Knowledge of non-destructive evaluation techniques specific to welded structures
  • Experience with welding process development for flight hardware

  • Required for certain Job Profiles: Ability to obtain and maintain Merchant Mariner Credential, which includes pre-employment and random drug testing as well as DOT physical
