Brown and Caldwell (BC) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Civil or Environmental Engineer experienced in water/wastewater planning and design. The candidate will work closely with the local Salt Lake City team and a national bench of practice leaders to deliver some of the most challenging water and wastewater projects in the region.

BC is 100 percent environmental and 100 percent employee-owned; this means BC is large enough to pursue and execute any project and focused enough to maintain a strong culture.

BC currently offers a flexible work environment with the ability to work most or all days in an office environment, or upon approval, work hybrid or remote from another location such as a home office.

Detailed Description:

BC has multiple water and wastewater projects under design and construction in the western US, including in Utah and Texas, that involve planning, design, and construction. These include all elements of water/wastewater treatment facilities as well as pump stations and piping infrastructure. The selected candidate will be expected to support delivery of these ongoing projects and also be expected to position for future work with clients which includes municipalities and regional water and sewer districts. This role will include working on teams as a senior project engineer, project manager, or design manager. It is anticipated the role will include progressively increasing client facing and client management opportunities. The candidate will be expected to support and eventually lead multi-discipline design teams, give technical guidance, adjudicate challenging client requests, be part of project pursuits, be present in the marketplace via professional organizations, mentor rising professionals, and collaborate with national experts to bring the best solutions to the projects assigned. It is anticipated that projects and clients in Utah will be priority with opportunity to support BC across the western US and Texas. Opportunities to spend time on site during construction to be part of construction management teams do exist.

Primary responsibilities include:



  • Support and eventually lead interdisciplinary teams to complete master plans and detailed designs of water or wastewater treatment, pumping, storage and conveyance facilities.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record for detailed design of water/wastewater facilities under guidance of BC Subject Matter Experts and Chief Engineers.
  • Adhere to BC Quality Assurance procedures.
  • Stay current with industry treatment practices and collaborating regularly with BC's Practice Leaders.
  • Supervise and mentor rising professionals.
  • Review work done by others such as geotechnical reports, memos and pilot studies to determine applicability to designs.
  • Prepare written reports and technical memoranda to document analyses and recommendations.
  • Participate in client and internal meetings to support and advance project work.
  • Be present on site to support construction teams as part of construction management staff as needed; this would include construction observation, RFI response, and submittal review.
  • Participate in proposal teams or serve as pursuit leader where BC is pursuing new opportunities.
  • Participate in professional organizations such as Water Environment Association of Utah (WEAU) or American Water Works Association Intermountain Section (AWWA-IMS) through committee assignments or presentations.
  • Build lasting and professional relationships across the office and BC's national practice through collaboration, embracing BC standards, and providing input when those standards and methods need improvement.
  • Participate in outreach to organizations such as universities to identify future candidates to support continued growth of the local office and region.


Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or related engineering field.
  • Minimum 4 years of increasingly responsible experience in municipal civil engineering with focus in water and wastewater projects. Projects that will be viewed more favorably include water/wastewater treatment facility planning and design and/or planning and design of water/wastewater pumping and conveyance facilities.
  • P.E. required in Utah or ability to gain reciprocity with 6 months of hire.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite of products.



  • Solid verbal communication and presentation skills.



  • Ability and desire to work on multiple concurrent projects in a team environment.



  • Ability to collaborate with remote virtual project teams.




Preferred Qualifications:



  • MS in Civil or Environmental Engineering or related engineering field.



Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Location A: $97,000 -$132,000
