The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience. Job Overview: The Labor and Delivery Technician functions as a member of the health care team and performs selected patient care activities under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse. Is also responsible for identifying critical unit support activities and identifying critical clerical/administrative functions as directed. These associates must be able to assist in all forms of labor and delivery procedures as necessary. Is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments (i, e, damaged floors/walls/ceiling tiles/unsecured areas) and medical errors, etc.) Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent required,
- Successfully completed a nationally or regionally accredited educational program for surgical technologists
- Certified surgical technologist credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor, or other nationally recognized credentialing organization.
- BLS through the American Heart Association
- Enrollment in a professional organization is desired.
Scheduling Requirements:

Essential Functions:
- Assist the Registered Nurse with circulating duties: selecting supplies and equipment, testing equipment, assembling instruments for the procedure, opening sterile supplies for the procedure.
- Assist the surgeon during the operative procedure: practice the principles of aseptic technique, scrub and set up a sterile organized work field, perform the initial count with the circulating nurse, assist the surgeon in draping the sterile field, anticipate the instruments, equipment or supplies needed, pass the appropriate instrument to the surgeon, maintain the count with the circulating nurse
- Assists the nursing staff with limited clerical duties, answers the phones and forwards messages to the appropriate staff, allows visitor access after checking on the appropriateness of the visit.
- Completes change of shift report, keeps the charge RN and manager aware of any problems,
- Demonstrates ability to assist with anesthesia procedures: Assist during labor/delivery operations, care/maintenance of the anesthesia machine, generate appropriate charges from Pyxis for the anesthesia department, performs weekly checks of emergency equipment (ie: difficult airway cart),
- Follows area-specific safety and pre-sterilization processes, rinses and cleans all dirty instruments, sprays cleaning agent on rinsed instruments, follows procedures for sending soiled equipment to SPD, documents accurately what equipment is sent and returned from SPD, identifies instruments needing repair.
- Keeps the labor and delivery suites in a state of readiness, maintains equipment levels at par, maintains linen levels at par, procures equipment and linen levels that are below par levels.
- Maintains optimal professional conduct and practices of Nursing Services: maintains a surgical conscience through honesty, demonstrate the ability to work effectively and harmoniously with all members of the team, promote team concept, observe the proper lines of authority, support the policies of the department and MMC, carries out tasks completely and promptly
- Responsible for enhancing knowledge regarding skills in labor and delivery nursing practice: records indicate attendance at seminars and classes both within and outside the institution, participates in professional meetings, participates in new staff orientation
- Provides a compassionate and supportive environment with prompt and consistent service,
- Adheres to patient rights: provides for the confidential treatment of all communications and records,
- Demonstrates professionalism with families, visitors, physicians, co-workers and supervisors,
- Listens and communicates effectively
- Supports teamwork by cooperative problem-solving through participation in meetings, projects, etc,
- Utilizes principles of continuous quality improvement in all work situations to assess, measure and improve organizational and department functions
- Organized work, sets priorities with a minimum of supervision and seeks guidance as appropriate.

- Participates in ongoing education as required,
- Performs indirect work as assigned that helps fulfill the aim of nursing care on the unit, performs other duties: courier service, minor clerical duties, other responsibilities.
