Overview
The primary function of the Academic Support Mentor is to provide guidance and support to USU Blanding Students based on his/her unique academic developmental needs, increasing student retention and graduation rates.

Responsibilities
  • Become a source of encouragement and support to students with academic challenges or at risk of failure as identified by the Student-Centered Platform and the Early Alert Report System.
  • Work with NASNTI Director and the Director of Programs, to identify resources to help students enhance personal development and career growth.
  • Give advice and guidance, share ideas, and provide regular follow-ups to students.
  • Share information and provide input on students' "mentoring action plan" connecting the student to the appropriate school support services.
  • Act as a sounding board for ideas/concerns about academic and career choices; provide insights into possible opportunities.
  • Work one-on-one with students or groups of students to teach and guide them through homework assignments and test preparation
  • Keep records of students' progress and interventions on the Student Support System for students to complete outside of the tutoring session.
  • Assist with time management strategies for students who are struggling to balance schoolwork with other responsibilities.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Have a solid academic background in Math, Science, and/or English.
  • Have superb analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Be available to tutor after school hours, and some evenings.
  • Friendly, patient, and sensitive to a diversity of students.
  • Candidates must have access to reliable transportation to and from the tutoring site.
  • Conversant in Navajo language

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bilingual in Navajo.
  • Bachelor's degree in Math, Science, or English.
