Job Summary:

The Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Specialist will be responsible for assisting with day-to-day EH&S responsibilities related to regulated waste management, permit compliance and client support for both lab and manufacturing environments. This role will also have the ability to learn and develop EH&S skills related to the biopharma industry.

Reporting to: Manager, Facilities and EH&S
Location: Newark CA - onsite
Pay rate: $30.00 - $34.00/hour


Responsibilities/Essential Duties:



  • Provide waste management support for hazardous and medical waste in a BSL2/BSL3 and GMP environment.
  • Perform regular safety and environmental inspections to support EPA, OSHA, and CDC requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to OSHA, EPA, and other regulations.
  • Provide biological material inventory support in a BSL2/BSL3 environment.
  • Perform chemical inventories, as needed.
  • Assist with risk assessments, audits, and identify/correct hazards.
  • Assist with spill response in both hazardous and biohazardous environments.
  • Perform other tasks, as directed by EH&S Manager and project leaders.
  • Ensure Select Agent and GMP compliance in all Select Agent and EH&S related documentation.
  • Ensure EH&S related documentation are retrievable and compliant.
  • Create, implement, and revise Select Agent and EH&S Sops through Document Control System.
  • Maintain safety libraries, prepare government reports, and document EH&S activities.



Basic Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience.



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree.
  • 1-3 years' experience in waste management, preferably in the biopharmaceutical industry.
  • Familiarity with DOT/IATA shipping regulations.
  • Strong understanding of California's hazardous and medical waste regulations.
  • Experience working with external regulatory agencies (BAAQMD, DTSC, CUPA, etc.) on permit compliance.
  • Have basic knowledge of general safety programs (LOTO/Confined Space/Hotwork).
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and observational skills for hazard identification.
  • Current Title 22, and DOT/IATA training.
  • Select Agent and Toxin experience.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to handle multiple and changing priorities.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
