The ESL Academy is part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Our mission is to provide high quality English language instruction and support to non-native English speakers for university studies or professional improvement. Approximately, 80-90% of our students continue their studies at the University of Colorado Denver. Our program consists of 5 levels from high-beginning to advanced and students attend classes 20 hours per week during the 8-week term. Completion of Level 5 of our program allows students to satisfy the English Language Proficiency requirement of undergraduate and graduate programs within the university.

The ESL Academy Part-time Lecturer position is a non-tenure track, 8-week appointment. The successful candidate will prepare and deliver instruction in the specific skill area based on the ESL Academy's curricular objectives designed to meet the desired learner outcomes. Additionally, Lecturers are expected to complete administrative tasks assigned by the administrative team, attend mandatory faculty/staff meetings (including level meetings), maintain office hours, and participate in program-wide events. This is an at-will appointment and consideration for rehire is based on student enrollment, seniority, and evaluated performance.

Faculty Title

What you will do:



  • Teach one or two courses per term assigned by the Academy's Director.
  • Adapt teaching to varying English proficiency levels.
  • Follow the Coordinated Schedule, objectives, and stated learning outcomes.
  • Provide timely feedback to students.
  • Communicate any student concerns to the Director or Program Manager.
  • Design (or adapt) and implement assessment procedures aligned with learning outcomes.
  • Complete assigned tasks on time, including grade entry, attendance tracking, and course documentation.
  • Meet institutional deadlines and comply with program procedures and policies.
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings and trainings including in-person pre-term and bi-weekly meetings.
  • Maintain weekly office hours (30 minutes per course each week)
  • Participate in ESL Academy on-campus events and initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively and professionally with colleagues in the ESL Academy
  • Demonstrate empathy and openness by actively seeking to understand students' diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.
  • Foster an inclusive environment and avoid assumptions or stereotypes by engaging with students respectfully and thoughtfully.


Qualifications you already possess (Minimum Qualifications)

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.



  • Bachelor's degree in English, Education, Communications, or related field with TEFL/TESL Certificate.
  • Two years of teaching ESL or EFL in an academic setting.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to teach a broad variety of ESL skill areas and proficiency levels.
  • Experience using technology in pedagogy.


Preferred Qualification to possess (Preferred Qualifications)



  • Master's degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or related field.
  • Four years of full-time teaching experience in an intensive English program setting.
  • Fluency in a language other than English.
  • Experience teaching English abroad.
  • Experience in: curriculum construction, assessment, and accent modification.
  • Experience with Canvas as a learning management system

  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills and the ability to establish rapport with persons of diverse backgrounds.

Conditions of Employment



  • Occasional work during the evening and/or weekends may be required.
  • This position requires an onsite presence on campus 5 days a week.


Mental, Physical, and/or Environmental Requirements



  • The ability to sit for extended periods, stand and walk occasionally, reach with hands and arms, use hands to manipulate a keyboard and mouse, and have good near vision for computer work; often requiring minimal lifting, but may involve bending or reaching to retrieve items from shelves or drawers.
  • Moves equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $2,500 per 1 non-credit, 8-week ESL course.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
