THE POSITION

The Department of Transportation is actively looking to hire a Transportation Construction Inspector who will undertake a range of technical responsibilities related to the inspection of materials and workmanship on highway construction projects within Engineering District 11-0. This role is crucial in ensuring that all construction activities adhere to the established codes, plans, standards, and specifications. The inspector will be tasked with evaluating the quality of materials used and the execution of work to guarantee compliance with approved guidelines. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will be responsible for inspecting all aspects of transportation construction activities. Your duties will include assisting in the verification of grades, elevations, and the layout of structures and roadways in collaboration with contractors and surveyors. You will also oversee the proper placement of various materials, including cement concrete, bituminous concrete, drainage components, and other relevant materials. Additionally, you will conduct compaction testing using visual non-movement methods to assess the integrity of sub-surface strata, soils, and aggregates. Engaging with department personnel, as well as representatives from federal, state, and local agencies, legislators, and the public, will be essential to ensure the smooth administration of projects. Furthermore, you will be tasked with completing master diary entries, performing mathematical calculations, estimating item quantities and project costs, and managing all necessary project documentation, whether manually or electronically. Your role will also involve assisting in the resolution of any field issues that may arise during the construction process.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • You will work closely with vendors and work hours may change based on vendor availability.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) ad-hoc as approved. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Bridgeville. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,907.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
  • Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
  • One year as an Engineering Technician(Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1(Commonwealth job titles or equivalent Federal Government job titles, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirement:

  • This position requires possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
