Description

DEFINITION
Under supervision, to keep assigned building spaces clean and orderly; to prepare rooms for meetings and to perform related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class require a minimal amount of previous custodial or general maintenance experience. Positions in this class perform work which is highly structured, which seldom varies and which is performed in accordance with established instructions. Incumbents receive thorough instructions when tasks are initially assigned and after training are expected to perform duties without constant supervision. Work is reviewed periodically upon completion and while in progress. Incumbents are expected to refer most variations in work to the supervisor for instructions.


Examples of Duties

Sets up and breaks down rooms and equipment for meetings, gatherings, and events; cleans offices and other areas in public buildings; sweeps, mops, strips and waxes floors; vacuums carpeted areas; dusts and polishes stainless steel and furniture, woodwork and Venetian blinds; replenishes supplies; cleans baseboards; cleans stoves and ovens; performs minor repair work to plumbing fixtures; cleans refrigerators; sweeps sidewalks and entry ways; cleans blackboards; maintains inventory of restroom and cleaning supplies; empties and cleans waste receptacles; washes windows; polishes metal work; turns out lights and locks doors and windows; performs minor building and related equipment maintenance repair work; maintains proper care of equipment and materials used in the work; operates City vehicles to pick up and deliver supplies, transport equipment and materials to various City facilities or event locations, and to complete department errands needed for the operation of the facility; and performs related work as required.


Typical Qualifications

LICENSE REQUIRED

  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License and a good driving record.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education:

  • Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to ensure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance.

Experience:

  • Possession of one (1) year of custodial work experience or work experience in a closely related field.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Basic math;
  • Proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the custodial trade;
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Ability to:

  • Perform routine cleaning work including washing, dusting, waxing, polishing and sweeping;
  • Read, understand and apply simple written materials;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices;
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.


Supplemental Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Strength: Medium work-lifting, carrying and/or pushing 50 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Applicants must meet each qualification for the position at the time of application submission. All applications will be reviewed based on the necessary employment standards for the position. As determined by the City and at the City's expense, successful candidates shall be required to complete and pass a medical examination, a drug/alcohol screen and a background investigation.
