Occupational Summary

Duke School of Medicine is hiring a Project Planner I to support a newly funded initiative focused on improving health and well-being among North Carolina's perinatal-to-three population. This role will manage medium-to-large projects across Communications, Events, and Faculty Research, applying project management tools and skills to meet program goals.

This position will support a newly funded, research-driven initiative focused on improving health and well-being for birthing parents and young children in North Carolina. The Project Planner I will manage medium-to-large projects across Communications, Events, and Faculty Research, applying project management tools and interpersonal skills to coordinate efforts across multiple teams. Responsibilities include operationalizing policy research, leading stakeholder engagement, and developing materials for program implementation. Funded by a philanthropic gift, the initiative begins with a six-month planning phase in collaboration with state and community partners to develop a 10-year implementation plan launching in 2026.

The initial term for this position runs through December 31, 2025, with renewal contingent on future funding. Annual extensions are possible based on funding availability. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Work Performed

* Apply standard project management tools, processes, and methodologies across medium to large projects.

* Support development of project and knowledge management systems to ensure accessibility of project information.

* Lead cross-functional project teams and facilitate meetings with internal and external stakeholders.

* Develop detailed project plans, budgets, schedules, and communication strategies.

* Monitor project performance, risks, and issues; recommend and implement mitigation strategies.

* Track milestones, manage scope changes, and coordinate with functional managers to resolve conflicts.

* Provide project management training and mentorship to staff.

* Facilitate cross-training and develop educational materials to enhance team performance.

* Serve as a preceptor on project management, care coordination, and maternal and child health topics.

* Coordinate engagement with state agencies, community organizations, academic institutions, and health systems.

* Maintain relationships with key stakeholders and support business development efforts.

* Attend meetings and conferences to identify new opportunities and represent the initiative.

* Generate internal and external project reports.

* Maintain accurate records of project data, expenses, and contracted work.

* Assist in writing and editing materials such as reports, newsletters, and website content.

* Support proposal development and review for large, complex projects.

* Travel, as needed, for client meetings and off-site project support.

* Perform any other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree. Additional training in Project Management or related training is desired.

Experience

Two years of experience in project management, with increasing scope and independence. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

* Excellent organizational, project management and communication skills

* Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with varied responsibilities; able to assess the impact of and respond flexibly to changing conditions.

* Training or experience in the fields of behavioral health, child welfare, early childhood, maternal and child health policy, public health, or patient safety is strongly preferred.

* Proven ability to plan and organize content with creativity and attention to detail, customize messaging for specific audiences (technical and non-technical) and appropriately translate complex scientific and/or technical details.

* Proven ability to facilitate large meeting spaces with multiple stakeholders including community-based organizations, academic institutions, health systems, and government agencies.

* Training or experience in research or policy analysis across the fields of behavioral health, child welfare, early childhood, maternal and child health policy, public health, or patient safety.

* Demonstrated experience in clinical care coordination delivery and/or oversight, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed approaches to community engagement and clinical care, and resource navigation.

* Experience working with Medicaid populations, child welfare systems, and integrated care models

* Knowledge/experience facilitating initiatives across health departments, health systems, health insurance plans, and/or community-based service organizations.

* Experience supervising clinical or research staff is strongly preferred.

Preferences

Four years of progressively responsible experience in project management and program coordination, including complex projects involving multiple functional groups. Experience in early childhood, maternal health, public health, care coordination, healthcare delivery, counseling, or social work preferred. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Master's degree or higher advanced degree preferred. Additional training in early childhood, maternal health, public health, care coordination, healthcare delivery, counseling, or social work preferred.

Anticipated Pay Range:

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $61,698.00 to USD $100,480.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
