About this opportunity:

The Indiana Academy is a residential high school housed on the campus of Ball State University serving around 300 gifted and talented sophomores, juniors, and seniors from Indiana. This is a 10-month, full-time, live-in position that is renewable annually upon good review. We cannot house any pets unless there is a ESA consideration. A valid driver's license for at least three years is required and the successful candidate must be insurable under the Ball State Fleet insurance policy. There is a $1000 stipend per semester for meals. We provide a furnished apartment; there is no commute. Housing costs (heating/cooling, internet, utilities, repairs, etc.) are covered. Each apartment includes a private bathroom and bedroom space. Additionally, the apartment has a living room/office space that is shared when on duty but functions as a private living room when off duty.
Full university benefits including health insurance, retirement, and tuition remission are offered/included. There is no meal plan included with this position, though meals are provided during the two weeks of initial training. Because this position involves working with minors, the successful candidate must pass a background check and complete additional training.

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

What you'll do and what you'll bring:

Position Function:

Full time live-in residence hall positions, with a primary work schedule during evening and weekend hours. Work with high school students to make significant contributions to their academic, personal, social, and physical development; encourage involvement in Indiana Academy programs and events; provide opportunities for problem solving and hones feedback; plan and support activities and be involved in student retention efforts; maintain a healthy relationship with students while remaining professional at all times. Responsible for the residence halls and staff in the absence of the Director and Associate Director in the 2nd and 3rd shifts of the workday as well as every other weekend. (10-month contract)

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

1. Willingness and commitment to work with the Academy's high school students and staff regarding the following areas: be a positive role model and example to others; protection and safety of all residents of the building; address conflict resolutions; addressing all behavior concerns and problems; counseling and referrals, encourage participation in community activities and events; supervise activities and special events; communicate maintenance needs to the Administrative Coordinator or the Associate Director of Residential and Student Affairs; work with, assist, and help support other areas of the school like Academic Affairs, Student Health Care and Mental Health and Support services.

2. Foster relationships with students on various floors of the Academy within the first semester.

3. Assess and provide feedback to students regarding residence life skills.

4. Provide supervision of students and staff and effectively confront and re-direct behaviors that are contradictory to the mission and goals of the Indiana Academy with confidence and consistency.

5. Provide input regarding roommate assignments; be aware of all room and roommate changes in coordination with the SLC's and the Administration Coordinator in consultation with the Associate Director. Support the SLC's in roommate conflicts and resolution.

6. Provide support and participate in the orientation, retention, training and development efforts of students and staff. Work with Associate Director if Residential and Student Affairs to hire, train, supervise, and schedule Ball State undergraduate student workers for front desk staffing needs.

7. Communicate regularly and be an effective resource to students, parents, teachers, and other professional staff and keep all documentation up to date and professional.

8. Provide programming for the residence hall; responsible for 10 programs/activities pers semester; co-coordinate and advise weekend activities and special events, including but not limited to Academy Awards Banquet, All Hall Weekend and Prom in conjunction with fellow Team Leader, the Associate Director and SLCs; support Peer Assistants in planning and implementing program for individual floors.

9. Manage the reservation of facilities, complete various desk duties, rounds, check-ins and curfew as part of daily residential operations.

10. Enforce all Academy regulations and policies.

11. Hold monthly meetings with team to organize team programming. Hold team members accountable for monthly and weekend programming.

12. Work cooperatively with floor co-professionals and fellow team leader.

13. Observe on-duty hours, including weekdays, weekends, and opening and closing the hall on specified times; perform duties as assigned and scheduled by the Associate Director of Student Life and the Director of Residential And Student Affairs; transport students in case of emergency, athletic practices, and general transportation needs as required.

14. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution by date of first pay period.

  • 4 months of experience working with students or youth of any age; or experience as a volunteer, working with, or helping others in a school, in-home, or any other setting.

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be insurable under the university's auto fleet policy; must be 21 years of age.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to student affairs/development OR master's degree from an accredited institution by date of first pay period.

  • Supervisory experience; experience with gifted high school students; professional experience in a residential school setting; student affairs experience; event planning experience; educational programming experience.

  • Evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills.
