JOB SUMMARY The Research Technologist provides advanced support for research technology and participates in the operational maintenance of the university's research technology platforms. This position serves as a key point of contact for troubleshooting and maintaining specialized research applications, high-performance computing (HPC) systems, research storage, data transfer services, and other technology solutions that support faculty, staff, and student researchers.The position collaborates with Research Technology System Engineers, IT support and infrastructure teams, and academic units to ensure timely resolution of issues and optimal performance of research environments. PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides advanced, escalated support for research computing environments, including endpoints, HPC clusters, research storage, virtual machines, and specialized software applications Performs system monitoring, routine maintenance, and troubleshooting for research technology infrastructure, escalating complex issues when necessary Assists in deploying and maintaining research-specific hardware and software, ensuring compatibility with university systems and security requirements Serves as a primary contact for resolving support tickets related to research computing, engaging directly with faculty, research staff, and students Documents support resolutions, standard operating procedures, and knowledge base articles for internal and end-user reference Collaborates with IT infrastructure and Research Technology System Engineers to test, validate, and implement updates or new tools related to research technology solutions Supports outreach and training initiatives, including workshops, consultations, and research technology office hours Adheres to university cybersecurity policies and data management best practices Performs special projects and other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Proficiency in troubleshooting Linux, Windows and Apple systems in a research or academic environment Knowledge of research computing platforms, including HPC clusters, research storage, or virtualized environments Understanding of cybersecurity principles, particularly in research data environments Strong customer service orientation with the ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical users Excellent documentation skills and attention to detail Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks Ability to install, configure, and troubleshoot research software tools and scientific applications Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, engineering or a related discipline; or equivalent experience Two years of professional experience in supporting advanced IT solutions, preferably in an academic or research setting Experience with ticketing systems and service management workflows (e.g., ITSM platforms)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience supporting research faculty and students in a higher education environment Familiarity with common research software packages and scientific computing tools Exposure to HPC environments, research data storage, or high-speed data transfer protocols Knowledge of IT service management (ITSM) frameworks such as ITIL Certifications such as Dell Hardware Certification, Linux+, or CompTIA Server+ Experience conducting basic training or workshops on technical topics
