Position Description:

The Plastics Engineering Intern will work closely with our engineering team to support various stages of product development, manufacturing, and quality assurance for medical plastic components. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a engineering, high-tech environment where innovation and precision are key.

The Alcon team is looking for a talented and motivated intern to join us onsite for next summer at the Fort Worth, TX location.

Alcon interns will have the opportunity to not only gain industry experience and network with other Alcon professionals. They will also have the chance to make a real-world impact by working on meaningful projects that will help patients and customers see brilliantly. Alcon also offer interns personal and professional development, high visibility and coaching and mentoring opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Product Development: Assist in the design, prototyping, and testing of new plastic components, ensuring they meet standards and specifications.

  • Material Analysis: Conduct research and testing on plastic materials to determine the best fit for specific applications, focusing on durability, performance, and cost-effectiveness.

  • Tooling and Equipment: Assist in the design, trial, and validation of tooling and equipment used in the research and development of plastic components, working to improve process reliability and product quality.

  • Documentation: Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations summarizing project findings, test results, and recommendations for process improvements.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with cross-functional teams, including design, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain, to support product development activities.

  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing product performance, reducing costs, and improving manufacturing processes.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in an accredited university or college for at least one semester prior to the internship, and at least one additional semester following your internship

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelors or Masters in Plastic Engineering

  • Academic performance: Minimum cumulative GPA 2.8/4.0

  • Demonstrated leadership skills (i.e. extracurricular activities or projects)

  • Must be authorized to work in the US on a permanent basis. Students on an F1 visa with CPT work authorization may be accommodated

  • Ability to commit to a 10-12 week summer internship, full time (40 hrs./week) project

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical Skills: Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Mold Flow), plastic materials, and manufacturing processes (e.g., injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming).

  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work on complex engineering challenges.

  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Team Collaboration: Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment, with a proactive approach to learning and contributing.

  • Adaptability: Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and processes in a dynamic automotive environment.
