The District Manager provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for multiple sites within an assigned region, ensuring consistent achievement of performance, safety, customer service, and financial goals. This role is responsible for developing and leading frontline and management teams, optimizing daily operations, and fostering a culture of accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement. The District Manager acts as a key liaison between field operations and corporate leadership, translating company objectives into actionable local plans. This includes managing budgets, staffing, compliance, and safety standards, as well as driving growth through operational excellence and customer satisfaction. Responsibilities of Position:
- Lead and develop Operations Managers and ensure consistent execution of company standards
- Oversee district performance (safety, service, cost, employee engagement, compliance)
- Manage district budgets, forecasting, and capital planning, and oversee Operations Managers' P&L
- Support talent management - hiring, training, and promoting leadership within the district
- Partner with the Region Vice President and the Region Controller to set strategy and ensure alignment with company objectives
- Serve as the primary liaison with local communities, municipalities, and government officials, ensuring positive relationships and compliance with service agreements or franchise contracts
- Represent the company at city council meetings, public hearings, and community events to strengthen partnerships and promote the company's commitment to environmental stewardship and reliable service
- Collaborate with municipal leaders on service changes, contract renewals, and community feedback
- Serve as an escalation point for operational or customer issues
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Ensure effective communication between operations, sales, maintenance, and support functions
- Perform other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibility:
- This position will manage 1-5 employees
- This position will oversee and direct other managers
Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:
- Deep operational understanding of hauling, transfer, and disposal functions
- Strong leadership, change management, and communication skills
- Ability to develop managers, implement strategy, and drive accountability
- Skilled in public relations, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement
Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:
- 8-12 years in waste management or transportation operations, including multi-site leadership
- Knowledge of safety regulations and requirements (DOT, OSHA)
- Proven success in managing budgets, P&L, and operational performance across several locations
- Experience working with municipal contracts, community relations, or government partnerships
- SWANA certification preferred, Environmental Compliance training preferred, or equivalent
Physical Requirements in a Regular Workday:
- Frequently lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 20 lbs
- Occasionally lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 50 lbs
- Rarely lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 75 lbs
- Continuously working outside in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions
- Continuously working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter
- Frequently stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling
- Occasionally climbing and/or balancing
- Continuously sitting/standing/walking
Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:
- Must be at least 19 years of age
- No more than 3 moving violations within the last 2 years
- Must not have any DUI's or OVI's within the last 5 years or 2 in the last 10 years
- Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas
- Exposure to residential and commercial waste
- Ability to travel between offices, as required
- Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays
- Must be available for 24-hour emergency calls
- Legally eligible to work in the United States
- Valid driver's license (if applicable)
- Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
- Must be able to read and speak the English language
