Position Summary

The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology (CCB) at The University of New Mexico (UNM) invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Organic Chemistry to begin in August 10, 2026. This is a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in experimental organic chemistry, with research preferences to include optoelectronic materials and/or biomaterials. Applicants must have a PhD in Chemistry or a closely related field by the date of application. For best consideration, all application materials must be received by November 5, 2025.

Applicants must provide evidence of expertise in organic chemistry. The new faculty member will teach core and required undergraduate and graduate courses in organic chemistry, as well as elective courses in materials, supervise graduate students, and contribute to the visibility of the department through service and outreach activities. The new faculty member is also expected to establish a leading research program distinguished by national recognition and continuous external funding that strengthens current departmental expertise, aligns with long-term strategic goals, and takes advantage of local resources and facilities. In particular, the successful candidate is expected to develop a research program that leverages the department's existing resources, including NMR and mass spectrometry facilities, as well as unique opportunities available through nearby federal laboratories.

The Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology is housed within recently renovated Clark Hall. The department benefits from resources/collaborations on campus, including the Center for High Technology Materials (CHTM), the Center for Micro-Engineered Materials (CMEM), the UNM School of Medicine, the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Center for Advanced Research Computing (CARC). Additionally, two nearby DOE National Laboratories (Sandia and Los Alamos) and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) provide excellent research and collaboration opportunities.

Qualifications

Minimum and Preferred Criteria:

Minimum

1. Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related field by date of application

2. Evidence of primary specialization in organic chemistry, with research emphasis/interest in optoelectronic materials and/or biomaterials

3. Post-doctoral research experience

4. Interest and ability to teach organic chemistry at the undergraduate and graduate levels

Preferred

1. Demonstrate potential to develop a nationally recognized, externally-funded research program, as evidenced through experience, publication record, and research statement.

2. Demonstrate strength in and commitment to teaching organic chemistry to students of all levels and backgrounds, as evidenced in the teaching statement and CV.

3. Interest in leveraging resources by establishing collaborations with researchers at UNM and local relevant institutions, as evidenced in research statement.

4. Willingness to increase the visibility of the department through service and outreach activities, as evidenced in cover letter.

5. A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities as evidenced in cover letter.
