Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Project Assistant (Matikainen Ankney Lab) for the Department of Psychology within the School of Arts and Sciences.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Supports ongoing research focused on animal behavior.
  • Collects data and maintains research databases.
  • Conducts background research.
  • Assists in preparing reports and presentations.
  • Manages the mouse colony and works with mice in behavioral experiments.
  • Helps to care for the animals.
  • Helps train student interns in how to collect data and follow lab procedures, as well as performing basic data analysis.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, psychology, biology, biomedical engineering, computer science, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience, such as data collection through laboratory experiments with animals.


Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing databases and experimental records.
  • Ability to train and mentor students effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Viral injections, subcutaneous injections, perfusions, fiber photometry, tissue slicing and mounting, and SNI surgery.
  • Arduino programming, 3D design/printing, and building rodent behavioral apparatus.
  • Familiarity with FED3 rodent behavioral devices.
  • Proficiency in Python for data analysis.
  • Familiarity with Bonsai workflows for data collection.

Equipment Utilized
  • Neurophotometrics photometry recordings, tinkercad, Python.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Ability to change a mouse cage.
  • Ability to solder using small, dexterous movement.
