Interstates is looking for motivated individuals at multiple levels to join our growing team as Field Technicians and Field Designers. Whether you're building hands-on constructability or leading advanced project design, you'll play a crucial part in connecting our design and construction teams, ensuring project success from concept to completion.

Core Responsibilities (All Levels)



  • Create, modify, and maintain virtual models and/or drawing sets using industry-standard design software, following Interstates' standards.
  • Serve as an onsite liaison, supporting clear communication between designers and construction or manufacturing teams.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams using both virtual and in-person tools to achieve project requirements and schedules.
  • Adhere to project workflows, follow agreed-upon documentation procedures, and archive revisions as required.
  • Participate in field measurements, peer reviews, process improvement, and continuous learning efforts.
  • Ensure work meets high standards of professionalism, organization, and confidentiality.


Field Technician (Entry/Intermediate Level)



  • Assist in field installation activities, gaining hands-on construction experience.
  • Create deliverable sets under direction; modify models or drawings as instructed.
  • Learn new tools and processes through research, mentorship, and feedback.
  • Perform self-checks and peer reviews to maintain accuracy and compliance.
  • Support 3D scanning and Trimble operations as needed.
  • Provide suggestions for workflow and tool improvements.


Qualifications:



  • High school diploma or associate degree required.
  • 1-2 years' experience in virtual design, construction, or technical drafting preferred; related education or hands-on experience will be considered.
  • Foundational knowledge of modeling software and construction documentation.
  • Strong computer, math, and organizational skills; effective communicator and collaborative team member.


Field Designer (Advanced/Senior Level)



  • Complete conceptual design packages in coordination with project leaders, using advanced design and VDC software.
  • Recommend electrical/automation best practices based on code, past projects, and industry standards.
  • Take a lead role in collaborating with clients, project managers, engineers, and subcontractors.
  • Mentor and delegate to team members, supporting their growth and quality output.
  • Set project direction, deliverable schedules, and assess risk/opportunity using analytical and BIM methods.
  • Troubleshoot complex design/installation issues, present effective solutions, and ensure optimal project outcomes.
  • Review project impacts from prefabrication/modeling; coordinate with construction and manufacturing to ensure schedule alignment.
  • Own advanced tasks such as 3D scanning and Trimble operation as required.


Qualifications:



  • High school diploma or associate degree in a relevant field required; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 4-10+ years' experience in virtual design/construction, technical modeling, or a related role-ideally in electrical or industrial settings.
  • Advanced skills with virtual modeling software and BIM standards; strong understanding of complex construction documentation and project coordination.
  • Excellent reasoning, communication, and mentorship skills; detail-oriented and adaptable with a track record of effective team contribution.

Travel Requirements: As part of the national construction team, this role involves being on-site at a wide range of locations across the country, with placements typically lasting 8 months or more.

Compensation: Compensation is based on experience and role level. Our salary ranges are determined by the experience and education required, and level of responsibility. The range posted for this role represents a range that Interstates, in good faith, believes it is willing to pay at the time of this posting. The pay is determined by job related skills, training, education, and experience.



  • Field Technician positions are typically hourly + benefits.
  • Field Designer positions may be salaried + benefits.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements Craft/Construction Site Environment

The work environment involves various construction site settings, where employees are often exposed to outdoor weather conditions, uneven terrain, and other potential hazards such as high or confined spaces, elevated noise levels, and electrical risks.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand or walk for long periods of time and use hands to reach for, handle, and manipulate objects. The employee is frequently required to climb and maintain balance on ladders and scaffolds while carrying tools. Reach for, handle, and grasp wires and hand tools, bend, crouch, stoop, kneel, and work in small places, lift and carry objects weighing twenty-five pounds (frequently) and fifty pounds (occasionally). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception; recognizing slight differences in shapes or shading, and ability to adjust focus.

Safety remains a top priority. Employees must strictly adhere to site safety protocols, which include wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, gloves, high-visibility clothing, and safety glasses. Role-specific PPE will be provided.
