Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Operations, Core Clinical Pathology, under the direction of the Associate Chief Clinical Operations Officer, serves as a key member of the senior leadership team with oversight of the Pathology/Laboratory Service operations to include: Hematology, Chemistry, Specimen Processing, and Send Out Testing. The Assistant Director provides leadership, implements operations enhancements consistent with vision and goals of the institution and the Chair of Pathology Department. Works collaboratively with the Pathology Laboratories leadership and key stakeholders' system wide. Provides institutional representation when necessary and in the absence of the Director. Promotes an environment of caring through equity, diversity and inclusion.
Duties & Responsibilities
- In collaboration with the Pathology Laboratories Medical Director, Section Medical Directors, Director of Operations, and other operational Leadership, develops department goals, objectives, policies, and procedures to insure the laboratories meets and exceeds the regulatory requirements of CAP, CUA, AABB, TJC, OSHA, FDA, and other laboratory regulatory bodies through a robust quality adherence program.
- In partnership with Pathology faculty, ensures quality testing and interpretations/reports are available to the providers and patients within appropriate timeframes.
- Assists with overseeing Laboratory staff and all technical operations of the laboratory to ensure efficient, effective, and uninterrupted laboratory operations.
- Supports the utilization of MediaLab software used throughout Pathology Laboratory Services for regulatory compliance.
- Aligns and supports Inter-departmental goals to provide optimal patient care and treatment in the institution. Ensures laboratory results maintain a high level of integrity and validity to provide safe and quality results to clinicians and patients.
- Assists technical staff and leadership to oversee and manage day-to-day lab operations and related issues.
- Sponsors, supports, and develops quality improvement initiatives throughout the laboratory and system wide.
- Collaborates with staff on projects from inception through Laboratory Investigation to Clinical Interpretation.
- Establishes and maintains a collaborative working relationship with all members to identify and resolve problems/issues both internally and system wide.
- Assists programs to plan, design and implement the installation of new or improved laboratory techniques.
- Supports the managers to oversee the quality control program to include problem recognition with resolution.
- Effectively investigates any issues or errors and implements corrective actions as needed.
- Assists managers to develop, implement and monitor laboratory policies and procedures throughout the laboratory.
- Assists laboratory's training programs to include competency assessment program, safety program, hazardous waste management, chemical hygiene plan, and injury prevention program.
- Reviews the programs' financial and operational reports to track and ensure adherence to budgetary, productivity and benchmarking standards.
- Assists and recommends the development and implement plans for growth, additional lab services and/or reorganization of Laboratory operations, budgets and asset allocations to enhance productivity, cost-effectiveness, and quality.
- Is accessible and responsive to the laboratory staff and management for consultations and resolving operational issues in a timely manner.
- Emphasizes team accountability to hospital standards of patient deliverables, financial performance, customer service, and use of laboratory services.
- Establishes positive working relationships with hospital leadership and stakeholders to enhance patient care.
- Encourages and enhances a positive working environment to promote high employee morale, engagement, accountability, and employee satisfaction to improve employee retention.
- Supports the development and education of the Pathology/Laboratory Service staff, students, residents, and fellows.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biological Science, Chemical Science, Physical Science, Molecular Biology, Molecular genetics, or related field required.
- Minimum of five (5) years' experience in a high complexity Clinical Laboratory required.
- Must have the education and experience equivalent to the guidelines mandated by CLIA/CLIS and NYS requirements for General Supervisor.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master of Science in Biology, Chemistry, or other related Science or MBA or MPH preferred (10 years of progressive leadership experience in Clinical Laboratory may be used in lieu Master's degree requirement).
- Knowledge of biosafety and chemical safety guidelines and the ability to enforce compliance to those guidelines required Leadership - Must possess excellent work ethic, sense of ownership and drive for excellence.
- Reasoning ability - Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Must be detail oriented and well-organized. - Computer skills - Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel and Outlook) and have the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new laboratory information system and other systems or technology.
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
- Critical thinking with effective problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment; manage and execute multiple projects, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
