JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The Lopez-Uribe Lab is hiring a part-time employee to workas a research assistant doing lab assays on pollen and nectar samples, growing and managing plants for greenhouse studies, and doing data collection measuring a variety of traits on plants in greenhouse experiments.Asuccessful candidatemust have great organization skills and attention to detail. Previous experiencewith growing plants in the greenhouse and lab techniques (following protocols, pipetting, operating lab equipment, etc.) is desirable.The position is available through December 31, 2025. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Entering data from a study on squash plant floral variation
  • Conducting spectrophotometry lab assays to measure protein / lipid content on pollen samples and sugar content in nectar samples
  • Growing and managing plants in growth chambers for use an experimental evolution study
  • Assisting with developing methods to measure a variety of traits onBrassicaFast Plants used in experimental evolution studies
  • Assisting with developing methods to conduct bumble bee pollination treatments ofBrassicaplants
  • Assisting with data curation, data analysis, and drafting peer reviewed paper

LOCATION AND COMMITMENTS

  • The work would be primarily at the Lopez-Uribe Lab at the Agricultural Sciences and Industries Building on the University Park campus
  • 5 hours a week, specific working times are flexible
  • Most work will be restricted to weekdays and normal working hours but there may be occasional odd hours to manage plants of conduct experiments

KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  • The person in this position will primarily be working with the postdoctoral researcher who is leading the research, though supervision and direction will also come from Margarita Lopez-Uribe. We do expect the employee to eventually work mostly independently on some tasks, such as managing plants and possibly some data collection tasks. Helpful, timely, and respectful communication with researchers in the Lopez-Uribe and other collaborations is necessary.

Compensation:

The starting rate for this job is $18/hour.
