This position is central to enhancing institutional effectiveness, optimizing operational efficiencies, and enriching the experiences of students, faculty, and staff. The ideal candidate will possess a strong analytical mindset, deep technical expertise in AI/ML, and a passion for driving innovation within the higher education landscape.

This position reports directly to the Director of Applications, collaborating closely to integrate AI solutions within existing university systems and drive technological innovation across all application platforms.

This full-time role will require at least one in-office day, while the remainder of the week can be remote.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • AI Solution Architecture & Integration for Education:




    • Architect, design, and develop end-to-end AI/ML solutions tailored to teaching and learning needs, focusing on scalable application development and deployment.
    • Design and execute pilot programs for new AI/ML interventions in real-world educational environments, collecting data on effectiveness and iterating based on feedback and results.
    • Lead the full lifecycle of AI/ML application development, including requirements gathering, prototyping, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
    • Collaborate seamlessly with IT and educational technology teams to integrate AI/ML models and applications into existing university systems.
    • Ensure robust data exchange and interoperability by leveraging standards such as Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) and Experience API (xAPI).




  • Data Science & AI Model Development:


    • Develop, train, and deploy machine learning models and AI applications using large, complex datasets from diverse university systems (e.g., SIS, LMS, CRM, financial systems, and the university's data lake environment).
    • Apply advanced techniques in natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, and predictive analytics to build innovative educational applications.
    • Implement and optimize AI/ML pipelines for real-time and batch processing, ensuring high performance and reliability in production environments.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to continuously improve AI models and applications, focusing on fairness, bias mitigation, and user-centric design.


  • Ethical AI & Responsible Use:


    • Ensure compliance with FERPA and institutional data privacy policies.
    • Champion responsible AI practices and contributes to AI governance and policy development.
    • Promote equity-focused AI design and bias mitigation strategies.



  • Insight Generation & Stakeholder Collaboration:


    • Engage cross-functionally with internal departments and external stakeholders to assess needs and deliver tailored analytical and AI-driven solutions that align with institutional priorities.
    • Translate complex findings into actionable insights in partnership with BI and reporting teams, ensuring clarity for non-technical audience (e.g., university leadership, department heads, faculty).
    • Partner with the BI team in developing reports, dashboards, and visualizations that communicate strategic implications effectively.


  • Research & Emerging Technologies:


    • Continuously monitor and evaluate the latest advancements in AI/ML, educational technology, and learning sciences, specifically identifying applications relevant to higher education.
    • Proactively identify and champion areas where AI can significantly enhance existing research methodologies, enable new lines of inquiry, or drive pedagogical innovation.
    • Contribute to discussions and pilot programs involving emerging AI technologies, including Large Language Models (LLMs) and generative AI, for educational and operational applications.
    • Potentially contribute to internal research projects focused on AI in education and institutional effectiveness.



    Compensation is determined based on the qualifications, experience, and circumstances of each hire. It is uncommon for new employees to start near the top of the salary range. We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including a tuition waiver and reimbursement program, health insurance, paid time off, and a retirement savings plan. The salary range for this position is $109,395 to $148,000.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:



    • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
    • Must be able to occasionally move around the work location.
    • Constantly operates office and/or teach equipment which may include computers, copiers, fax machines, audio/visuals.
    • Frequently uses voice and hearing to communicate with students, staff or colleagues face-to-face or over the telephone.
    • Visually or otherwise identify, observe and assess.
    • Occasionally move, carry, or lift 10 pounds.
    • Frequently positions self to maintain computer related equipment which may involve bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
