New Mexico PBS (NMPBS) seeks a visionary General Manager & Chief Executive Officer to lead NMPBS into the future of public media. Key Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the KNME Board and University of New Mexico Administration, the general manager and executive director provides strategic direction for all aspects of NMPBS, including:

  • Represents NMPBS and licensees (University of New Mexico and Albuquerque Public Schools) at community and business meetings; presents information to legislative committees, State agencies, Congress, and/or Federal agencies on behalf of NMPBS and its licensees.
  • Advises administration and board on communications matters affecting public and educational broadcasting; participates in and provides leadership to national and regional professional organizations.
  • Serves as chief advocate on behalf of the station to potential donors, including foundations, corporations, capital campaign participants, program sponsors, underwriters, and individual givers; actively participates in strategic funding initiatives, and actively pursuing contracts and grants from various agencies.
  • Serves as principal liaison to station licensees' administration and governing boards; initiates and maintains cooperative relationships with other public broadcasting entities in the state.
  • Coordinates and cooperates with appropriate departments of the university, public schools, and other agencies in the development of programs and consults with respective agencies on matters relative to the mission of instructional and public television.
  • Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness and implements innovations that align with the evolving media ecosystem.
  • Designs, establishes, and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the organization's goals and objectives; oversees recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of unit staff.
  • Develops and implements initiatives to expand audience services and update broadcasting, satellite, cable, wireless, and facilities.
  • Develops, and provides strategic oversight of, entrepreneurial revenue generation, including fundraising, member development, monetizing excess capacity, and ancillary spectrum.
  • Oversees the development of annual operating budgets, as well as cost and productivity analyses.
  • Oversees and manages the integrated day-to-day operations of the station, to include program development and production, outreach and education, marketing and funding, finance and human resources, broadcast engineering and operations, regulatory compliance, and reporting.
  • Represents the station and its licensees on local, state, and national boards and committees pertinent to the operations and strategic direction of the station.
  • Explores opportunities for enhanced collaboration across media platforms, including potential shared services, operational efficiencies, and unified strategies to strengthen the public service mission across broadcast and digital media.

Conditions of Employment
  • Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Significant experience leading a public media organization, including providing strategic direction and oversight of day-to-day operations.
  • Deep understanding of public broadcasting technologies, including digital distribution, streaming, and broadcast operations.
  • Strong record of fiscal management, budgeting, and strategic planning.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, manage staff performance, and foster professional development.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, membership development, and cultivating philanthropic support.
  • Knowledge of FCC and CPB regulations, spectrum policy, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and advocacy skills with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to grow revenue streams and innovate in a changing media ecosystem.
