Job Description:
Transportation Operator Non-CDL:
- The Department is seeking a CDL crew member and an individual interested in joining our team who can operate power tools and heavy equipment (chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump truck, loader backhoe, motor grader, tractor w/attachments) and perform manual labor as a Maintenance Operator.
- You will respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions.
- Conditions attend work zone training, prepare work zones, and perform traffic control.
- Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws, and use equipment properly and safely participate as a working team member performing manual labor, including clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance, and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.
- The department is an emergency response agency, and this position is the core of this requirement; therefore, you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Position will flag traffic, assist in setting up work zones, perform manual labor with roadway maintenance work crews, and drive pick-ups and one-ton trucks.
- Positions may perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles and equipment.
- Positions are designated as essential, and as such, may be required to work outside normal hours on nights, weekends, and holidays during emergency operations.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
- Ability to remain constantly aware and observant of surroundings to maintain safe work zones for workers and the traveling public.
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand-held and power tools. Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
- Valid driver's license
- Experience in roadway maintenance and flagging operations.
- High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.
- Ability to work in diverse conditions, including exposure to weather outdoors in all seasons.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting to 50 lbs.
- Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's license (CDL) and Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
- Demonstrated experience in equipment operation comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to work in inclement weather and respond to accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc, during/after normal work hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Valid COL or CDL Permit.
- Experience with heavy manual labor and heavy equipment operation.
- Experience performing pre11entive maintenance and minor equipment repairs. Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal, storms, and accident response and clean-up.
- High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.
