As a Development Services Technician, you will provide customer service to internal and external customers relating to permitting processes. We Require
- Two years of administrative duties and paraprofessional technical customer support experience
- High school diploma or GED
- Post-secondary education may substitute for the experience requirement on a year-for-year basis
We Also Value
- Experience in a call center environment
- Proficient bilingual skills in English and Spanish
- Experience working in a governmental permitting environment and using automated permit-tracking systems
- Experience with permitting and construction or building trades code requirements
- Experience with the interpretation of federal, state, and county statutes, codes, etc.
Job Contributions
- Defuses confrontational exchanges with dissatisfied customers on the telephone
- Serves as a resource for citizens and other department staff on other agencies that can be contacted to help resolve complex environmental issues where the department does not have jurisdiction
- Enters and retrieves data from or into a database while simultaneously conversing with customers; types of general correspondence regarding compliance and status of permits; responds to the permit-related questions via e-mail and other departmental information for tracking purposes
- Receives website and facsimile-generated inquiries and accurately enters required information into Permit Center software for routing to the correct staff member and/or program; maintains all web and facsimile-generated application forms in accordance with the department's record retention policy
- Learns and follows standard operating procedures relating to customer service, record retention, and manages inquiries from customers by researching and providing general permit and inspection information
- Routes inquiries to the appropriate subject matter experts when necessary
- Regularly researches, corresponds, contacts, and maintains an accurate phone and mailing list of other governmental and private agencies that handle various complex environmental issues to assist customers' inquiries and situations when the department does not have jurisdiction; accurately inputs contact information for these agencies into the Environmental Services Card File
- Delivers delinquent and pending invoices, along with legal documentation advising stakeholders of permit status
- Other duties as assigned
Working Conditions
- Exerting up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly OR requires walking or standing to a significant degree
- Position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions
