The Retail Manager I builds support for the University by cultivating relationships, forging partnerships, and increasing awareness of the Campus Store's contributions. This role stewards' strong relationships with key internal and external constituents, including alumni, Athletics, academic colleges, internal departments, and the local community. The Retail Manager I is responsible for sales floor operational leadership, staff supervision, and ensuring the store delivers an excellent customer experience while aligning with the University of Arizona's mission and values.

This position requires some evening, weekend and holiday work.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Forecasts staffing needs while managing labor budgets for the University of Arizona Campus Store.
  • Plan and execute strategies to ensure merchandise availability, proper inventory levels, and excellent customer service.
  • Ensures compliance with inventory control measures and cash handling policies.
  • Processes and monitors transfer orders and special orders to ensure accuracy and timely fulfillment.
  • Submits and tracks federal work-study documentation for student employees in accordance with university policies.
  • Serves as Sales floor Manager on Duty along with opening and closing responsibilities.
  • Supervises a team of 75-100+ student employees to include leading recruitment, hiring, training, daily direction, performance evaluations, and scheduling to maintain coverage within budget.
  • Approves and manages student payroll in University's payroll/timekeeping system (UAccess).
  • Serves as a key mentor to student staff, fostering leadership, accountability, and customer service excellence.
  • Supports a positive and inclusive workplace culture aligned with the University's values.
  • Works closely with the Sales Manager and Assistant Director to evaluate inventory needs, documentation, markdowns, and stock adjustments.
  • Implement merchandising plans and in-store marketing campaigns to drive revenue and enhance customer engagement.
  • Monitors sales trends and identify opportunities for growth or improvement.
  • Conducts regular inspections of the retail space to maintain a clean, safe, and appealing shopping environment.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with strategic campus partners and community stakeholders.
  • Upholds, safeguards, and promotes the core values and service philosophy of the University of Arizona Campus Store.
  • Maintains accurate records of transactions, product returns, staffing documentation, and store performance metrics.
  • Ensures adherence to university policies, risk management guidelines, and state/federal regulations.
  • Supports other administrative functions as needed, including vendor coordination and system updates.
  • Additional duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of retail operations, inventory management and other retail best practices.
  • Ability to organize and manage on-site and off-site sales events.
  • Advanced knowledge of point-of-sale systems and retail technology.
  • Ability to communicate with a varied range of students, staff and community members.
  • Ability to adapt and work in a fast-paced environment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional-level experience.
  • Three years of relevant retail, supervisory, or operational experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

  • Five years of relevant retail, supervisory or operational experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), each year the University of Arizona releases an Annual Security Report (ASR) for each of the University's campuses. These reports disclose information including Clery crime statistics for the previous three calendar years and policies, procedures, and programs the University uses to keep students and employees safe, including how to report crimes or other emergencies and resources for crime victims. As a campus with residential housing facilities, the Main Campus ASR also includes a combined Annual Fire Safety report with information on fire statistics and fire safety systems, policies, and procedures.
