Preparation Assistant (Gallery lighting focus), Part-Time (Non-Exempt)

Schedule: flexible, part-time positionwith avariable schedule. Number of hours worked per week will fluctuate based on business needs. This role is ideal for someone seeking a flexible work arrangement.

Pay Range: $19.00-$23.75 based on experience.

What You'll Do



  • Assist with exhibition lighting needs and burnout replacements for all gallery spaces across the Museum campus.
  • Install lighting fixtures, lamps, lenses, gels, GOBO's and other lighting accessories.
  • Aim, focus and frame the lighting on the artworks.
  • Set gallery lighting for both environmental and atmospheric purposes.
  • Adhere to Museum standards, stewardship and conservation guidelines to set the appropriate light levels on artworks.
  • Work with lighting designers and contractors as needed. Assist with maintaining inventory, packing, storage, movement and maintenance of Museum's stock of lighting fixtures and equipment, exhibition furniture, cabinetry and related props.
  • Assist with all aspects of rotation activities in museum galleries and work closely with other areas of ECS to ensure a seamless and efficient implementation process.
  • May assist with wall construction, gallery patching and painting, gallery maintenance and other build-out and art installation activities as needed in preparation for an exhibition or gallery rotation.
  • May assist with fabricating, modifying and maintaining exhibition cabinetry and pedestals.
  • May assist in supporting other Exhibitions and Collections Services departments including Collections Management, Registration, Conservation and Photography on various projects as needed.

Qualifications

What We're Looking For

You might be a great fit if you have:



  • Knowledge of museum lighting practices and application.
  • Skill in using museum equipment such as lifts, ladders, etc.
  • Ability to work independently or with a team.
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to work collaboratively and constructively within a team framework.
  • Good reasoning and problem-solving ability.
  • Knowledge of museum exhibition and art handling best practices preferred.
  • Experience with hand tools and some power tools required.
  • Knowledge of work safety practices and issues.
  • Skill in establishing priorities and coordinating work activities.
  • Ability to deal with multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to find creative solutions in a flexible manner.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of disciplines and interests.
  • Ability to understand and work within institutional priorities.



This role has some physical requirements



  • Work environment includes exhibition galleries, a wood workshop, and some office.
  • Use lift equipment (scissor lift, forklift, rugger, stacker).
  • Use art moving equipment including A-frame, carts, furniture dolly, pallet jack.
  • Use hand and power tools.
  • Exposure to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment.
  • Lift, push or pull more than 50 pounds.
  • Stand, walk, sit, and climb.
  • Eye/hand/foot coordination.



This position is covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement with AFSCME-CWU.
