The Position

The PTD Global Biologics organization plays a pivotal role in the development and commercialization of the company's biologic portfolio, which includes standard monoclonal antibodies, complex immunoglobulin constructs, fusion proteins, and antibody-drug conjugates. The organization focuses on several key strategic areas: ensuring the rapid and agile delivery of new biologic molecules to clinical settings, developing and validating robust and environmentally sustainable commercial processes, and facilitating the smooth transfer of these processes to both internal and external manufacturing sites.

Additionally, PTD Biologics is dedicated to innovation, developing and implementing next-generation technologies that modernize Roche's commercial production network. By providing integrated strategies and systems that support the entire lifecycle of biologic therapeutics-from early research to post-launch-PTD Biologics ensures that each therapy is developed, validated, and produced to the highest standards, reinforcing Roche's leadership in the biologics sector.

The Opportunity

The Global Head of Biologics Technology leads Roche's global bioprocessing network, focusing on strategic alignment, oversight, and innovation. This role ensures the seamless integration of new technologies from development to commercial manufacturing, with a strong emphasis on safety, compliance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness in drug substance, drug product and respective process analytical developments.

The position drives the adoption of advanced technologies in upstream and downstream processing, ensuring their successful integration across the bioprocessing network, as well as seamless connection between DS and DP. Key responsibilities include managing DS/DP Process Equipment, Analytical Instrumentation for Process Monitoring and Control, AI applications, and Process Modeling. The role also involves fostering collaborations with internal and external partners to maintain Roche's leadership in bioprocessing. Additionally, the Head will establish the vision, strategy, and organizational practices to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective solutions across the global network.

Primary responsibilities and accountabilities

In this position, accountable for consistently and effectively:

  • Lead Strategic Programs: Lead, coordinate, and coach cross-functional, cross-discipline teams for large, strategically important projects from initiation through Post Launch Review. Act as the matrix leader for Biologics technology groups, ensuring alignment of program objectives across teams.

  • Develop and Implement Technology Roadmap: Establish and own the technology roadmap for the organization, incorporating the latest innovations and developments. Conceptualize and implement strategic innovations that align with Roche's long-term goals.

  • Strategic Leadership and Portfolio Contribution: Contribute to the strategic direction of the product portfolio, providing constructive input on scenarios, alternatives, and strategies. Advise senior management on key scientific and technological developments.

  • Maintain Quality and Execution Standards: Ensure quality standards are maintained across projects, coordinating task execution to ensure successful completion. Provide high-quality leadership to cross-functional teams, fostering collaboration and excellence.

  • Foster Strategic Alliances: Build and maintain strategic alliances and collaborations with internal and external partners, including external technology developers, academic institutions, and industry leaders.

  • Drive Innovation and Technology Integration: Lead the evaluation and integration of new research areas, technologies, and programs into the existing portfolio. Advise on the analysis and interpretation of R&D results, presenting findings to relevant committees and overseeing publications.

  • Anticipate and Address Challenges: Foresee challenges in the organization and market, advising on innovative solutions to unknown problems. Take on special assignments such as due diligence for new opportunities.

Who You Are

Education/Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, or a Life Science related discipline.

  • 15+ years of experience in the bio-pharmaceutical industry, i.e. biologics manufacturing, development or related CMC functions, with at least 10 years of senior managerial experience

Experience, Skills and Knowledge

  • Recognized as a scientific authority and thought leader in bioprocess technology, with a proven track record of driving innovation and solving unique, strategic problems that significantly impact the organization and industry.

  • Extensive experience (15+ years) in bioprocess development, large-scale biologics production processes, and related technologies, with a strong understanding of network alignment and integration.

  • Experience working within a global network, with a deep understanding of regulatory and quality requirements, and the ability to align bioprocess technologies across multiple sites and geographies.

  • Strong business acumen, with the ability to proactively identify and resolve issues that influence business direction and drive changes within the industry or discipline.

Values, Leadership and Competencies

  • Demonstrated leadership in managing strategically important international or global multi-disciplinary projects or initiatives, with a focus on aligning bioprocess technology and driving innovation within the global network.

  • Ability to execute organizational plans and contribute to the development of departmental or divisional strategy, considering internal and external standards, and the evolving business environment.

  • Exceptional leadership and team management skills, with the ability to collaborate, influence, and drive alignment across a global bioprocessing network.

  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities, complemented by strong financial acumen and budget management experience.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with proficiency in English (reading and writing); proficiency in German is an advantage.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $205,900 - $382,500. The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Oceanside, CA is $178,600 - $331,800. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
