Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Campus Y has been a hub for social justice at UNC-Chapel Hill for over 160 years. Since its establishment in 1860, the Y has grown into UNC's largest and most vibrant student organization, with more than 2,000 student volunteers each year engaged in pluralistic and diverse initiatives that champion civil and human rights not just in North Carolina but around the world. The Campus Y is uniquely positioned as a hybrid unit on campus. The Campus Y serves as both an administrative unit to three high impact initiatives including Bonner Leaders Program; the Global Gap Year Fellowship; and the CUBE Social Innovation Initiative and as an organization of 30 plus student run, social justice committees that focus on social and environmental justice issues in the areas of community inclusion, education and youth development, public health, global issues, and advocacy. As a hybrid organization, the Campus Y administrative unit and the student run committees work collaboratively under a shared mission, vision, and core set of values. The three departmental programs, along with the 32 Campus Y committees all have a common thread that centers on social justice.
