Job Description - CNC Vertical Mill Machinist

The CNC Vertical Mill Machinist is responsible for setting up, programming, operating, and maintaining CNC vertical milling machines to produce precision parts from metal and other materials. This role requires expertise in machining processes, tooling, blueprint reading, CNC programming, and a strong commitment to producing parts that meet strict tolerance and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Set-Up & Programming

Set up CNC vertical milling machines for production jobs, selecting appropriate tooling, fixtures, and workholding methods.

Load and verify CNC programs, making necessary offsets, edits, and adjustments to achieve required tolerances.

Properly secure and align workpieces, ensuring accurate positioning for vertical milling operations.

Machining Operations

Operate CNC vertical mills to perform machining tasks such as facing, drilling, boring, contouring, pocketing, and slotting.

Monitor machine performance and make real-time adjustments to cutting speeds, feeds, and tool paths.

Troubleshoot machining issues, including tool wear, surface finish, or dimensional deviations.

Blueprint Interpretation

Read and interpret blueprints, CAD models, and technical drawings.

Translate specifications into machining instructions and setups.

Verify part dimensions and tolerances to ensure compliance with engineering and customer requirements.

Quality Control

Conduct first-article inspections and perform in-process quality checks using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and other precision measuring instruments.

Document inspection results and make adjustments to maintain tolerances.

Collaborate with the quality team to resolve any dimensional or quality concerns.

Safety and Efficiency

Follow all shop safety procedures and wear required PPE (safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, hearing protection, etc.).

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Continuously look for ways to improve efficiency, reduce cycle time, and extend tool life while maintaining quality.

Documentation and Reporting

Accurately record setup data, offsets, and production activity in the shop management system.

Maintain production records including completed work orders, inspection data, and quantities produced.

Report equipment malfunctions, shortages, or delays to supervisors promptly.

Continuous Improvement

Stay up to date with CNC machining technology, controls, and tooling.

Suggest and implement process improvements to increase productivity and accuracy.

Participate in training programs, workshops, and professional development opportunities as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or certification in CNC machining preferred.

3+ years of experience operating and setting up CNC milling machines, preferably vertical mills.

Strong knowledge of G-code, M-code, tool offsets, and CNC programming principles.

Experience with multi-axis machining or CAM software a plus.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.

Stand, walk, bend, and perform machining tasks for 8-10 hours per shift.

Strong hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and depth perception for precision machining.

Comfortable working in environments with noise, vibration, and varying temperatures.
