Position Summary

The Department of Pathology at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking a full-time academic Clinical Microbiologist to join our faculty as an expert consultant on either the tenure track or non-tenure track. Rank and tenure will be commensurate with the candidate's experience, qualifications and funding.

UI Health is an enterprise that includes a 470 bed tertiary care hospital, 30+ outpatient clinics and patient-centered research entities including the University of Illinois Cancer Center. The University of Illinois College of Medicine Chicago is one of three campuses that make up the nation's largest public

medical school. The Department of Pathology in the College of Medicine provides testing in all major disciplines including microbiology, chemistry, hematology, transfusion medicine, HLA/transplant and molecular pathology including next-generation sequencing along with an active surgical pathology and cytopathology service.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • The responsibilities of the position are to assist with the direction of the clinical microbiology laboratory, including the detection, identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of human infectious diseases, ensuring policies and procedures comply with CLIA regulations and CAP accreditation standards, and providing consultative service for clinicians.
  • The role also requires teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as providing education to laboratory and clinical staff. Research participation as a collaborator or primary investigator is required. Candidates must be able to support all sub-disciplines of Microbiology and have experience in susceptibility testing and molecular diagnostic methods; experience with laboratory automation is a plus.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills, and a commitment to working closely with other clinical services are necessary.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    PhD, MD, DO, DO/PhD or MD/PhD degree from an accredited institution

    MD/DO candidates must be Board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology (AP/CP) or clinical pathology (CP) with subspecialty certification by the American Board of Pathology or American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM)

    PhD candidates must have board certification by the American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM).
