Would you like to be part of the team that supports critical wastewater, stormwater, solid waste, and capital facility infrastructure for the largest county in Virginia? Come join Stormwater Management, a nationally recognized team within the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) that works to improve water quality and the health, safety, and welfare of the county's 1.2 million residents. We are seeking a Maintenance Crew Chief.

This position supervises and participates in the work of a crew engaged in a variety of maintenance and construction activities, to include:

  • Functioning as a lead worker when the supervisor is not on site .
  • Engaging in routine manual labor as required.
  • Organizing the work crew and estimating the amount of material necessary for each job. Responsible for ensuring the crew's compliance with work rules and guidelines.
  • Adjusting or constructing manholes, asphalt or concrete walkways, catch basins, headwalls, retaining walls, storm sewer pipe, cinder block and brick and other construction carpentry work as required.
  • Operating various vehicles and equipment, such as the crew van, single-axle dump truck, small trailer, flat-bed truck, utility bucket truck, snowblower, self-propelled riding mower, snowplow and spreader water truck.
  • Loading and unloading mowing equipment from trailers.
  • Performing equipment and vehicle maintenance checks.
The successful candidate will possess :
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Experience in preparing safety tailgate topics for crew and presenting safety topics at meetings.
  • The ability to lead 3-4-man crew to perform work duties.

Note: The appointee to this position will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.

*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Maintenance Crew Chief position. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a GED issued by a state department of education; and two years of experience in maintenance, construction, or a related field.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • A valid motor vehicle driver's license.
  • Class "B" commercial driver's license (CDL).
    • Tanker Endorsement within 12 months of hire.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and a medical examination to the satisfaction of the employer prior to appointment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • One (1) year experience in giving oral and written instructions to labor crew in performance of work orders.
  • One (1) year experience in site sedimentation and erosion control measures.
  • One (1) year experience using hand tools skillfully, efficiently, and safely.
  • Confines space entry certification.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift/ slide up to 90 lbs. with assistance. Ability to set up and operate Vacuum Flusher truck equipment units. Effectively communicate both oral and in writing. Must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment and use other automated technology to input, access and retrieve information from a laptop or desktop. Visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitors such as GIS maps. Must be able to physically negotiate rough terrain on uneven ground such as hills, wooded and marshy areas. Must be capable of pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, and climbing to enter permitted confined spaces such as in and out of catch basins and manholes. Per safety requirements, confined spaces may not be entered by persons who weigh 310lbs. or more. Must be physically fit to perform manual labor in all types of environments. This requires the ability to endure variable and extreme weather conditions such as hot, cold, during rain, noisy environments, etc. Requires the ability to stand, stoop, bend, reach, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crawl, lift, as well as work in strenuous and uncomfortable positions for long periods of time to manipulate materials with manual dexterity, use of hoses, and operate units up to 12 feet tall to set up and perform maintenance. The ability to wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), such as a hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt and personal fall arrest harness. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Panel interview and may include exercise.

BONUS ELIGIBILITY:
Positions within this classification that require a CDL that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee. Must have CDL at time of hire.
