Position Overview

The Designer II position supports the design and production of water and wastewater engineering construction plan sets, and other related and technical documentation. Establishes design criteria, performs necessary engineering calculations for design or complete systems with minimum supervision. Success in this role includes the delivery of high-quality work with increasing independence and autonomy defined by reduced revisions from technical manager reviews. A pivotal team contributor to the overall project team goal of completing timely designs and submittal packages for project approvals.

Primary location: Greenville, SC; experienced candidates may be considered to sit in either Charlotte, or Asheville, NC.

Key Responsibilities



  • Participate in projects related to the planning, assessment, and design for both new and existing water / wastewater infrastructure. The role will primarily focus on water and wastewater conveyance (gravity sewers, force mains, pump stations, and water distribution), exposure to treatment plant design is a plus but not required.
  • Develop and maintain standard details, P&IDs, valve schedules, and appurtenance layouts aligned with company CAD standards.
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with the project team to ensure successful delivery of projects.
  • Develop preliminary and final design documents including technical drawings, specifications, and cost estimates
  • Participate in the preparation of permitting drawings, exhibits, and regulatory submittals
  • Generate utility conflict analyses and coordinate with GIS and survey datasets
  • Prepare engineering reports, basis of design narratives, and technical memoranda
  • Participate in site visits for data collection, constructability reviews, and as-built verification
  • Coordinate with engineering staff and subconsultants to deliver cohesive design packages
  • Lead QA/QC efforts on design documents prepared by Designer I staff
  • Mentor junior designers and provide guidance on modeling and CAD standards
  • Contribute to workload planning and task delegation with project leads
  • Perform hydraulic analysis for water distribution and wastewater force mains/pump stations using modeling tools (e.g., WaterCAD/WaterGEMS, SewerCAD/SewerGEMS; or similar). Demonstrated proficiency in at least one package; others are a plus.
  • Engage in continuing education on municipal utility design practices and tools


Skills + Experience



  • Lead and assist with the design of water and sewer pipelines, pump stations, valve vaults, storage tanks, and appurtenances; progressively own plan/profile sheets and detail development.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic transients/surge considerations (plus).
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental, or related engineering discipline
  • 2 to 5 years of relevant experience in water/wastewater design
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification preferred or actively pursuing PE license
  • Advanced skills in AutoCAD Civil 3D and utility design features
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro and experience integrating GIS with CAD workflows
  • Experience with at least one water/wastewater modeling package (e.g., WaterGEMS/WaterCAD, SewerGEMS/SewerCAD, or similar); ability to set up, calibrate with available data, and run scenario analyses.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver under deadlines
  • Commitment to mentorship and collaboration in a team setting

  • Work will primarily be in an office setting with limited opportunities to be exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

  • Must be able to carry, lift, and push/pull up to 5 pounds frequently and up to 30 pounds occasionally.
  • Additional physical duties may be required, as necessary.
