We are hiring for an Assistant Operations Manager in our Elizabeth, NJ Terminal. Could this person be you?

The Terminal Assistant Operations Manager is responsible for managing and providing training for ILA rail, vessel and yard gangs and stevedoring with the objective of maintaining a safe work environment, maximizing marine, yard and gate productivity, controlling cost and meeting terminal and operational requirements. Assists with the enforcement of the security plan to ensure compliance with Federal Regulations CFR 105. Ensure to continuously strive to improve the service to all customers and provide an environmentally safe working environment for all ELZ and ILA employees.

As an Assistant Operations Manager you will:

  • Lead and coach Foremen/Chief Supervisors and hourly union labor to ensure safe and productive operations.
  • Use operational data to identify trends, solve problems, and communicate performance insights.
  • Make real-time decisions to optimize labor, equipment, and yard space.
  • Resolve conflicts and grievances with fairness, empathy, and discretion.
  • Monitor labor arrival times, authorize overtime, and ensure accurate payroll records.
  • Enforce safety standards and disciplinary procedures when necessary.
  • Collaborate across departments to improve terminal performance and service delivery.

Technology You'll Use

  • Terminal Operating Systems (TOS) - such as Navis N4 or Tideworks, for managing vessel, yard, and gate operations.
  • Labor Management Systems (LMS) - for scheduling, tracking, and optimizing labor resources.
  • RFID & GPS Tracking - for real-time asset and cargo location monitoring.
  • Microsoft Power BI or Tableau - to visualize operational data and tell compelling performance stories.
  • Excel (Advanced) - for data analysis, forecasting, and reporting.
  • KPI Dashboards - to monitor productivity, safety, and cost metrics.

What Does APMT Terminals look for in a Qualified candidate?

  • High school diploma/GED required; college degree preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and mobile apps.
  • Strong communication, conflict resolution, and people management skills.
  • Ability to interpret data and translate it into actionable insights
  • 2+ years in supervisory or management roles.
  • 3+ years in transportation, supply chain, warehouse, stevedoring, or equivalent military experience.
  • Valid driver's license or ability to obtain one..

Job Type: Full Time

Salary: 85,000.00 to 95,000.00

Benefits: Full time employees are eligible for Health Insurance, Paid Time Off, and 401k Match

The above stated pay range is the anticipated starting salary range for this position. The Company may adjust this range in light of prevailing market conditions and other factors such as location. The Company will work directly with the selected candidate(s) on the final starting salary in accordance with all applicable laws.
