The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking a water resources technician to join our Bismarck, North Dakota, team. In this hybrid role, you will work with diverse project teams of engineers and scientists on civil engineering and related technical assignments. Work will include completing designs using CADD modeling software, preparing spreadsheets and construction plans and specifications, completing site development designs, and writing reports. It will also involve performing construction cost estimating, construction observation, and facility inspection. Responsibilities may also include involvement with or support of project teams involved in hydrologic/hydraulic modeling, water quality modeling, and GIS work. This person may also work with permitting agencies and public officials. Work may require short-term, out-of-town assignments.

Your impact - key responsibilities

  • Hydraulic & hydrologic analysis: Hydrologic analysis related to stormwater planning and flood control and hydraulic analysis and design related to storm sewer infrastructure, rivers, streams, conveyances, dams, and other hydraulic structures.

  • Reporting: Assisting with the preparation of technical reports, plans, and specifications and working with clients, permitting agencies, and public officials.

  • Field support: Completing site inspections and field data collection.

About the opportunity

  • Compensation: The anticipated rate of pay for this position is $21.10-25.00/hour. This position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. Barr has a "no retained earnings" model and distributes all its profit to our employees through our bonus plan and ESOP.

  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Barr's Minneapolis or Duluth, Minnesota, offices.

  • Work environment: Ability to work in an office environment. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you - required core competencies

  • Education: Two-year technical certificate or experience/coursework directly related to the job responsibilities described above.

  • Experience:

    • Computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Word as well as intermediate to advanced knowledge of Excel.

    • Basic understanding of water-related concepts, standards, and environmental regulations.

    • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or other CAD-based civil design software.

    • Familiarity with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling approaches and commonly used software.

    • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

    • Flexible working style and willingness to occasionally modify personal schedule as required to meet deadlines and/or client needs.

  • Software: Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office and PDF editing software.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.
