Job Description:

We are currently looking to hire a highly motivated individual to support the RSES (Research, Science, and Engineering Services) contract located at the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). The candidate will be responsible in ensuring the security, compliance, and resilience of the NASA ASDC databases and have experience working with federal compliance frameworks, securing hybrid cloud environments, and managing actions across the large network. Preference is for candidate to work onsite in a hybrid form, but will consider

remote work for the right candidate.

Job Description

The successful candidate will be required to perform the following tasks.

  • Linux System Administration
    • Experience in working with Linux systems
    • Ability to do essential system administration on Linux systems hosting databases
    • Ability to learn and perform additional system administration duties on Linux systems
  • Database administration (PostgreSQL/MySQL/NoSQL/MongoDB)
    • Databases in a Linux environment
    • Planning of physical database environment. Capacity planning.
    • Install, configure, test, monitor, upgrade and tune new & existing postgres/mysql/mongodb instances
    • Create and maintain database standards and policies
    • Support database design, creation, testing and connectivity
    • Manage database availability and performance
  • Database design and architecture
    • Create and optimize tables, indexes, views, and stored procedures
    • Design and implement database structures that meet the organization's needs
  • Database maintenance
    • Stay on top of database software new releases and affect to application
    • Manage database availability and performance
    • Support database design, creation, and testing
    • Manage incidents and problems
  • Database Security
    • Security/integrity controls
    • Manage incidents and problems
    • Implement and maintain database security measures, including access controls, user authentication, encryption, and auditing as required to protect sensitive data from unauthorized access and potential breaches.
  • Database monitoring
    • Use monitoring tools to review the performance of the database and server
    • Collect performance-related statistics and metrics
  • Disaster recovery
    • Create regular backups and recovery plans
    • Ensure that backups are created and perform recovery procedures to restore lost data. Conduct comprehensive risk assessments and manage continuous monitoring efforts for both on-premises and cloud environments.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field is required. Master's Degree is a plus but is not required.
  • 5 - 7+ years' experience in an enterprise systems environment as a system administrator and security agent.
  • Proven experience as a Database Administrator with at least 5 years of hands-on experience managing and administering PostgreSQL/MySQL databases.
  • In-depth knowledge of PostgreSQL database management systems, including installation, configuration, maintenance, and performance optimization.
  • Strong command of SQL and database query optimization techniques for PostgreSQL/MySQL.
  • Ability to represent systems through good communication skills (orally and in well-documented plans) with customer, including ISSO and OCIO
  • Knowledge and understanding of LINUX environments (filesystems, storage, architecture).
  • Understanding/familiarity with OpenShift.
  • Expertise in securing physical, virtual, and containerized infrastructures in a hybrid environment.
  • Experience with endpoint security, network security, and firewall management.
  • Familiarity with "DevSecOps" practices and securing CI/CD pipelines in an on-premises and cloud environment.
  • Knowledge of configuration management protocols to ensure up-to-date inventory of systems, software, and libraries.
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to DRBD/PCS (High Availability Tools)
  • Scripting experience
  • Consulting and interfacing with other team members
  • Exposure to pgbadger/ nagios /pgadmin /postgis tools and extensions
  • Previous experience with a NASA or other US government agency and Knowledge of Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) controls
  • Strong knowledge of identity management, MFA, and RBAC for hybrid environments.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Self-starter who can work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to work with stakeholders in a hybrid environment.

US Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required

Salary range: $45/hour-$70/hr. based on experience

The selected applicant will be subject to a security investigation and employment is based on the ability to attain Minimum Background Investigation clearance and physical and logical access to NASA LaRC.
