Research Data Analyst
Job Summary Note: This is a Limited position at 20% FTE with a June 30, 2026 end date.
Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced research professional with a full understanding of in-depth statistical analyses and / or research software programming techniques. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
We are seeking a research data analyst who is skilled in applying quantitative analytical methods to large epidemiological datasets to study and improve a wide range of neonatal and infant outcomes. Specifically, this data analyst needs to be familiar with the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) database. This database links maternal and infant information from 1 year prior to 1 year after birth. The database structure as a maternal/infant dyad is complex and requires specific analytical skills. The Data Analyst will work with research scientists and clinicians on a national level to support the analysis of a wide variety of different epidemiological projects. Additionally, the Data Analyst will support pediatric trainees who seek exposure to epidemiological data research. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $87,900 - $126,900 (Annual Rate). Department Description The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest and most complex departments in the School of Medicine. The department is comprised of 19 divisions employing over 400 faculty, 83 fellows, 84 residents, 31 Post Docs and non faculty academics and 170 staff. The Department has annual clinical income from inpatient and outpatient activities totaling over $90 million and annual extramural funding (contracts and grants) exceeding $40 million. The department ranks 17th in the nation among Pediatric departments for funding from the National Institutes of Health.
The Department's clinical enterprise is based at the 183-bed UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco, the 191-bed UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, Mount Zion, Zuckerberg San Francisco General, and at a number of outreach clinics throughout Northern California, providing the Department with an unsurpassed opportunity to meet the needs of infants, children, and young adults throughout the Bay Area. In 2019, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals ranked in all 10 children's specialties in U.S. News and World Report.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- Minimum 3 years of related experience
- Thorough knowledge of data analysis methods, including summary statistics
- Data formats: Must be able to manipulate wide range of epidemiological data
- Software -Demonstrated experience in a statistical computing language including R or Stata
- Proven skills and experience in independently resolving broad computing / data analysis problems
- Self-motivated and work independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated experience and ability to collaborate effectively with all levels of staff; technical, students, faculty and administrators
- Demonstrated ability to contribute research and technical content to peer-reviewed manuscripts, conference abstracts and/or grant proposals.
- Must be able to multi-task, work in a team, interact with clinicians, researchers and collaborators, communicate results (written, oral)
- Must be interested in enabling health science through working on collaborative data analysis projects
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization and to external research and education audiences
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or PhD degree in Public Health or Data Science or equivalent experience
- Experience working on health-related research projects
- Skills in project management
- Knowledge of medical terminology with a focus on pregnancy and neonatal medicine
