Job Description

Rockwood Casualty Insurance Company, a division of Argo Group, is the leading underwriter of voluntary workers' comp insurance for the coal mining industry in Pennsylvania, and licensed to write business in 49 states. In addition to writing coal mining business, Rockwood writes a great deal of commercial worker's comp business in a diverse arena of exposures. Rockwood also offers other lines of coverage such as general liability, pollution liability, commercial auto and excess policies. Rockwood's primary function of an Underwriter is to offer a high level of risk selection resulting in a profitable book of business. In addition to risk selection responsibilities, an underwriter is responsible to offer the highest level of service to our insured's and agency force. This includes monitoring the various stages of policy issuance, approving interim endorsements request's, following up on loss control and engineering recommendations and monitoring loss activity. The underwriter position is an interim level position requiring a moderate amount of oversight with development into a position of a senior underwriter.

SCOPE OF WORK

  • Risk determination based upon peril identification, hazard recognition, risk mitigation and individual account information.
  • Offer a high level of risk selection and pricing for new and renewal business within the underwriting guidelines. This task should utilize all tools available such as internet research, engineering, IRMI and underwriting manual research on exposures, loss analysis and producing a premium indication.
  • Underwriter is required to operate within their established Lines of Authority(LOA) and obtain any required approvals that may fall outside of that authority.
  • Monitor losses and take appropriate underwriting action, if necessary to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Working knowledge of ImageRight and Word, Outlook, Excel.
  • Process and deliver quotes and denials to our agents.
  • Approve tasks related to servicing of an account such as endorsement and cancellation requests.
  • This position requires the ability to communicate accurately and clearly both orally and written to our agents and insured's alike.
  • Maintain constant review of changes in the marketplace for potential new business opportunities.

  • Polished and professional written and verbal communication skills. The ability to read and write English fluently is required.
  • Bachelor degree preferred.
  • Proficient in the use of computer programs, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, and preferably Access.
  • Applicant should have 1 to 3 years of P&C experience.
