The Coding Education Specialist is a system-wide educator and coach who translates complex coding rules into practical guidance for professional & facility coders, physicians, APPs, clinical documentation teams, and Revenue Cycle Operations (RCO) partners across Mass General Brigham. By combining data-driven analytics with adult-learning best practices, the specialist designs and delivers multi-modal education (live, virtual, and self-paced) that improves coding accuracy, elevates documentation quality, reduces denials, and supports strategic initiatives such as new-technology rollouts and AI-readiness. The role serves as a liaison among Coding QA, Compliance, Clinical Departments, and Operational Leadership to ensure education remains timely, collaborative, and measurable
Essential Functions:
-Continuously refresh our coding curriculum with the latest CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS rules and payer guidance, keeping all materials aligned to MGB policy and industry best practice.
-Lead live, virtual, and on-demand training for coders and revenue-cycle (RCO) partners-covering code sets, compliance, and documentation excellence.
-Build interactive e-learning modules using modern authoring tools so staff can learn anytime, anywhere.
-Coach coders in real time, reviewing charts for accuracy and regulatory compliance.
-Partner with RCO partners and clinical teams to strengthen documentation that drives precise, defensible coding.
-Run targeted coding audits, deliver actionable feedback, and monitor follow-up improvement.
-Maintain an ongoing learning cadence that highlights new regulations, specialty updates, and emerging trends.
-Instill ethical coding standards, emphasizing compliance, fraud-prevention, and professional integrity

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree Health Information Management preferred, or bachelor's degree Related Field of Study required

  • Experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree

Licenses and Credentials

  • One or more credentials are required for this position: CPMA, or CPC, Or RHIA , or RHIT

Experience

  • 3+ years' experience coding multi-specialty, required.

  • 2+ years in coding quality (auditing and/or reviewing), or coding education strongly preferred.

  • Intermediate experience in Microsoft 365 products, preferred

  • Instructional Expertise - Energizes adult learners by translating complex coding rules into clear, engaging lessons and flexing delivery methods to suit visual, auditory, and hands-on learning styles.

  • Regulatory Mastery - Holds comprehensive knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM/PCS, HCPCS, payer policy, and CMS/OIG compliance requirements, ensuring all education aligns with current industry standards.

  • Exceptional Communicator - Crafts concise written resources (tip sheets, SOPs) and delivers dynamic in-person or virtual presentations that resonate with coders, clinicians, and revenue-cycle teams alike.

  • Data-Driven Decisions- Leverages audit and denial metrics to spot skill gaps, design targeted interventions, and quantify training impact on accuracy.

  • Decisive, Evidence-Based Judgment - synthesizes information, guidelines, and stakeholder input to make sound training and coding decisions that balance compliance, efficiency, and ROI.

  • Collaborative Partner - Builds strong working relationships with coders, QA, CDI, compliance, and operational leaders to advance shared goals and sustain continuous improvement.
