The Engineering Project Support Manager creates, facilitates and improves portfolio management, resource management, and financial management procedures used in the Portfolio Management process. Day-to-Day Role:
- Work with Business Unit Leaders, Project Managers, and Project Leaders to identify, prioritize, select and plan corporate projects used in the portfolio management process. Troubleshoot, analyze, and implement solutions
- Facilitate the project intake process for proposed portfolio projects, based on ROI/NPV and criteria to meet corporate objectives
- Improve project management procedures, templates, and tools to enhance capabilities used to rank and assess projects managed in the portfolio
- Facilitate annual portfolio management process maturity assessments and the development of process improvement plans and/or process roadmaps
- Provide published portfolio management policies, procedures, and job aids that are easily accessible by all Portfolio Management stakeholders
- Regularly maintain portfolio management policies and procedures documentation and educate appropriate employees on the status of policies that have an impact on their job responsibilities
- Work with Project Managers to maintain information for all projects and all programs used across the portfolio
- Present/Facilitate status updates to the executive leadership team as appropriate
- Facilitate portfolio management meetings to review portfolio status, new project proposals, and metrics that support portfolio decisions
- Establish clear decision-making guidance and recommendations for portfolio rankings, options and potential impacts and facilitate communication regarding the decisions that are made
- Support effective integration between various corporate departments by suggesting and driving process improvement through the Portfolio Management process
- Drive portfolio management process improvements including resource management, reporting and analysis, allocation analysis, and metrics
- Use resource plans, labor forecasts, and data to support the portfolio management decision making process
- Assist in Risk Mitigation by identifying risk elements and developing mitigation strategies for projects and potential transition issues
- Create a thorough inventory of all programs and projects, develop a valuation for each program, prioritize project investment, track key metrics against each product and leverage this data into the portfolio discipline to make application life-cycle decisions
Core Skills and Qualifications: The ideal candidate must possess all of the following:
- Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in Business, Engineering, or related field
- Five (5) years of experience leading Portfolio Management related activities
- Three (3) years of experience with Project Management leadership including implementing Project Management Methodologies
- One (1) year of supervisory experience required with strong leadership skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary in order to persuade and influence decision making of individuals, groups, or work teams, and to explain difficult issues
- Advanced project portfolio management skills with proven ability to work within and facilitate cross-functional teams and work groups
- Ability to train and mentor staff in project portfolio management processes
- Competent in project portfolio concepts and designs in order use business tools within a strategic context and how they can be leveraged to positively impact the portfolio model
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills and thought leadership
- Ability to utilize business sense and creativity to develop new ideas and solutions
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to establish and maintain relationships
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
- PMI PMBOK framework knowledge and best practices experience
- SharePoint experience
- Microsoft Project Server experience
