Position Summary

The University of New Mexico's Center for Geospatial and Population Studies (GPS) serves as the New Mexico State Demographer's Office and liaison to the U.S. Census Bureau. We provide accurate, impartial population data and objective analysis to support government agencies, lawmakers, and the public in making informed, data-driven decisions.

GPS is seeking a Student Data Analyst to collect, organize, and analyze data related to Group Quarters living facilities in New Mexico.

The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Collecting data on Group Quarters populations-such as those in nursing homes, correctional facilities, and college dormitories-from a variety of sources including direct telephone outreach.
  • Organizing collected data into comprehensive spreadsheets or databases.
  • Researching facilities using web-based sources and direct outreach via email and phone.
  • Gathering and analyzing data from the U.S. Census Bureau and other relevant datasets.

Preferred Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

Enrolled in a degree-seeking program at UNM. Enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (Audit hours do not count), and if Work Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Preferred Qualifications

-Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel

-Experience working with data from the U.S. Census Bureau

-Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS 10, or QGIS

-Exposure to programming languages such as Python, R, SAS, SQL

-Knowledge of New Mexico's geography and cultural landscape

-Strong interpersonal and communication skills

-Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team

-Must be comfortable making phone calls to relevant organizations
