Job Overview

The Specialist, Industrial Engineer will be responsible for optimizing Macy's investment in automation and systems for a one million+ square feet highly automated fulfillment center. The individual will develop and deploy effective tools, methods and processes that reduce waste, utilize data-driven decision making, and promote robust lean problem solving. The Industrial Engineer should possess a background in engineering disciplines and hands-on operational experience. Strong collaboration and communication skills are required for partnering with and influencing operations teams.

What You Will Do



  • Collect and interpret operational data including labor standards, throughput, and space utilization.
  • Engineer and standardize job functions in partnership with operations and peers across the Macy's network.
  • Own collection of time studies and assist in the development and evaluation of labor management standards.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and lean initiatives to reduce waste and enhance productivity.
  • Help develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and training materials for process changes.
  • Develop and implement process improvement and cost savings initiatives for a one million+ square feet highly automated customer fulfillment center.
  • Analyze data using Excel, SQL, Access and other data management systems.
  • Visualize data and process flows using MS Visio.
  • Monitor existent metrics, analyze data, and partner with internal teams to identify process and system improvement opportunities.
  • Practices open and continuous communication, values keeping others informed, effectively presenting information in a clear, concise manner.
  • Ability to effectively plan and execute strategies.
  • Ability to solve problems as well as recognize issues and deal with them directly.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
  • In addition to the essential duties mentioned above, other duties may be assigned.


Skills You Will Need

Analytical and Problem-Solving: Continuously analyze work processes, identifying optimization opportunities and implementing improvements. Review analyses of activities, costs, operations, and forecast data to assess department progress toward goals.

Communication and Interpersonal: Conduct presentations to retail division and senior management with strong written and oral communication skills. Demonstrate interpersonal competencies, including integrity, trust, adaptability, motivation ability, coaching, mentoring skills, and initiative. Be proactive, responsive, detail-oriented, and get things done in a fast-paced environment.

Mathematical Ability: including the ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages, and the ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.

Business Acumen: Oversee industry understanding of warehouse management, negotiation skills, and strategic/tactical planning skills. Demonstrate proficiency in problem analysis.

Resourceful and Efficient: self directed and capable of managing multiple priorities with strong follow-through in a dynamic, fast paced, metric-driven environment, adapting quickly to changing priorities.

Technology: material handling systems, human factors (human-machine/technology interaction, warehouse control system, skilled in Microsoft Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Visio, AutoCAD, and Project.

Six Sigma: experience a plus

Who You Are



  • Candidates with a Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply.
  • This position requires heavy lifting, constant moving, standing, and reaching with arms and hands. Requires prolonged periods of standing/walking around the facility or department, lifting at least 50 lbs. stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing ladders. May involve reaching above eye level. Requires close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, holidays.
