Job Description Summary:

The Pharmacy Clinical Manager, in collaboration with pharmacy leadership, functions to set the strategic vision for clinical pharmacy services and limited operational services at Nationwide Children's. This person will provide leadership and management for their direct reports, ensuring appropriate evaluation, implementation, and coordination of assigned clinical pharmacy and operational responsibilities. The Pharmacy Clinical Manager will ensure quality training and competency programs are designed, implemented, and standardized to the extent possible for each team in the Department. This person will serve as a contributor towards numerous hospital committees as assigned, including the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. This position will coordinate medication evaluations for formulary consideration as well as pharmacoeconomic and utilization management efforts from a clinical perspective by their team. The Pharmacy Clinical Manager will coordinate and offer assistance and guidance on quality improvement initiatives, research and publication efforts, teaching and precepting, any other scholarly activities, and strategic planning for their team. The incumbent also serves as a preceptor for pharmacy students and residents as needed. Pharmacy Clinical Manager must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Job Description:

Essential Functions:

  • Participates in the development of the plan to accomplish team goals in the areas of patient care, teaching and research.
  • Develops, coordinates and documents specific team performance and quality improvement activities. This includes identifying clinical indicators to monitor, establishing thresholds for interventions, and developing programs to correct identified deficiencies.
  • Selects staff or new personnel for areas of responsibility, coordinates orientation and training for new and on-going staff educational needs in conjunction with appropriate internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provides timely, routine feedback as well as coordinates performance evaluations for staff in a timely manner.
  • Develops, coordinates and documents departmental clinical performance improvement activities. This includes working with other managers, coordinators, supervisors and staff to select clinical indicators to monitor, establish thresholds for interventions and develop programs to correct identified deficiencies.
  • Serves as a preceptor for intermediate or advanced pharmacy students. Serves as a preceptor for the pharmacy residency programs.
  • Provides clinical pharmacy services to patients as needed, which may include covering for other pharmacists while out of the hospital.
  • Leads team in cost-containment and utilization management initiatives specific to patients served by Nationwide Children's.
  • Plans and leads execution of appropriate staff education and evaluation of on-going competency.
  • Collaborates with Managers and Directors to provide standardized orientation and training for current and new staff.
  • Facilitates preceptor development opportunities for all pharmacy preceptors.
  • Coordinates and precepts student and resident clinical educational experiences.
  • Provides feedback and collaborates with other Directors, Managers, Supervisors, and Coordinators regarding performance evaluations for staff in a timely manner.
  • Serves on hospital and departmental committees as needed.
  • Contributes to and serves as a contributor to Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and coordinates presentation of appropriate drug monographs and Medication Use Evaluations to this Committee.
  • Maintains knowledge of current clinical and medication safety literature, including ISMP publications, and implements any necessary changes at Nationwide Children's.
  • Participates in local, state, and national pharmacy organizations and/or programs related to pharmacy practice.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and skill to work directly with staff in all pharmacist positions, if needed.
  • Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Education Requirement:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (preferred) or Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college of pharmacy

Licensure Requirement:

Licensure, or licensure-eligibility, to practice pharmacy in the state of Ohio

Certifications:

  • BPS Board Certification (or eligible for testing, with certification to be obtained within 24 months of hire)
  • Completion of a Teaching Certificate program is preferred

Skills:

  • Evidence of strong clinical and leadership skills
  • Ability to lead and direct the staff and their activities
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate
  • Must be able to demonstrate clinical competency as evaluated by hiring manager through an independent self-case and/or case presentation in pharmacy
  • Basic skills in using and documenting in an electronic medical record
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills required in providing education to patients/families and patient care team members; as well as in interactions with students, the public, pharmaceutical representatives, and representatives from external institutions (i.e., colleges of pharmacy, health care institutions)
  • Aptitude for detail and medication safety skills

Experience:

  • PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residencies (or PGY1 residency and PGY2 fellowship)

  • OR PGY1 residency with 3 years of hospital pharmacist practice experience (pediatrics preferred)

  • OR 5 years of hospital pharmacist practice experience (pediatrics preferred) with responsibility for direct clinical patient care similar to that provided through a PGY2 residency
