DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Program Director and Genetic Counselors, the Genetic Counselor Assistant is the first contact for patients seeking cancer genetic services at UCSD. Duties include patient intake (collecting family history and genetic testing information, triaging new patient referrals), managing genetic test orders (assisting patients with providing testsamples, managing orders and results at multiple laboratories, sample tracking), and liaising with oncology providers to assist with genetic testing (maintaining genetic testing supplies, assisting with requisitions and patient education materials). Performs all other duties as assigned by the genetic counseling staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of genetics and genetic concepts.

  • Thorough knowledge in administrative procedures and processes including strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, active listening, critical thinking, multi-task, and time management skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both over the telephone and in person.

  • Ability to deal sensitively and effectively with patients.

  • Strong attention to detail skills. Excellent organizational skills.

  • Proven customer service and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work well both independently, with little supervision, and in a team setting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in a biological/health science; or an equivalent combination ofeducation and experience.

  • Experience with patient and or family contact in a community or medical setting.

  • Previous experience with clinical projects, either in an administrative or clinical role.

  • Experience with Epic system.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical practice terminology and genetic terminology and concepts.

  • Bi-lingual or multi-lingual capability (Spanish, other).

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs. Occasional weekend/holiday coverage.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $40,700 - $88,030 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $19.49 - $42.16

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
